Teacher - Help with a student

7 replies

Earlier today I had a student basically have a breakdown and had to go home. When speaking to him, I found out that the school had previously known that he had self-harmed and has had multiple breakdowns in class but nothing was done. No support has been offered. I want to help him but don't know what to do. Would other staff members get into trouble about not doing something beforehand?

You do not get personally involved.

You can listen and support but
your school has a safeguarding team and you must report all incidents like this to your School's dedicated child protection officer.

Are you sure you're a teacher?
Have you done safeguarding training?

If they don't act, you log & repeat ad infinitum.

@Elodie2019

I am a teacher etc. The thing that is concerning me is the fact no one has done anything before about it.

Are you sure you're not the parent?

A teacher wouldn't be asking this.
It's standard safeguarding. As a teacher you KNOW to report concerns to the CP lead.

Schools have a strict protocol to follow if students are observed behaving in a certain way or if they disclose information regarding their welfare to a teacher.

Mmm I agree, every teacher knows there are safeguarding procedures in place. Surely you'd know what to do from your safeguarding training??

I probably worded my original comments wrong. I know what I should do about the child, but I don't know what to do about the other members of staff who knew but did follow procedure. Why wouldn't they?

You can't know they didn't follow procedure.

A crusade isn't going to help anybody.
