Two jobs - decision time

I'm waking at 4am for the last few days as I have a dilemma.

For the past 4 years I've been in one department, where part of the work is corporate governance/compliance. The rest is administrative, with ownership of trademarks and domains for the worldwide group.

The risk team under a new manager has taken the governance aspect. However, because of my knowledge of group and the fact I've been doing the necessary filings I've been asked to come on board that team. It is a good 35-40% of my current role. The manager intends to expand the role to give more value to the company. But also add code of conduct policies group wide to the mix.

Now in my existing role my current manager offered data protection investigations in order to fill that space. So I'd be doing my normal job with data protection, thrown in. I know to some people both these roles sound dull, but I really get off on necessary rules.

Now in the risk team I'd be working like a silo, which some days fits my personality, but other days is helpful to collaborate. No one in the team knows about my job. Team is a loose word as they all do very separate things and just happen to have the same boss. They're never in the office oh and I would have to travel sometimes to the other office in the middle of nowhere.

In my current role the team is good people. However, management is non-confrontational and there are some personality conflicts that haven't been treated appropriately. Not about me but, I don't like to witness it. Overall, it's a great team. we've all been to each others houses, met each other's families. Get on well personally. Data protection is new, it's sexy and if you are good, you will command serious money. Both jobs are about managing risk.

I suspect, based on jobs I've seen that I'm currently overpaid. Only one job paid more but it was very unusual and requested a qualification that I didnt have time to study for.

I also have outside financial interests that I have been neglecting recently.

I've asked for a Job D for both roles. This is long and if you are still here, I need to know what to do. Any help appreciated.

So governance or DP?

You're obviously an analytical thinker but you're concentrating on the wrong points.

If you don't have a strong feeling either way about the actual work, what about the future prospects? Flexibility?

But if you don't want to be left to work autonomously - which the risk team sounds like you will be - stick with DP.

Thanks for reading and responding, I know it's a very long post.

Both managers are a bit vague about development opportunity once say the first 1-18 months is done. That's what I'm concerned with in relation to corporate governance. Because after that the role will become very samey, if not chance of growth. Whereas running investigations will be something where there will be continuous learning and I could see scope for movement and develpment. I have no experience of the manager of governance, but I coudl definitely leave after qualification, and work less and get more money but that would only be after qualification.

Whereas in DP, I know the manager and my time is pretty flexible without my need to move I work half days on Fridays. But otherwise it's a pretty full time role.

I'd favour the data protection role, mainly because there are specific legislative guidelines to leverage and there is good scope for advancement, in terms of identifying gaps, working with key stakeholders to address the gaps and I still good practice in the organisation.

Arguably Governance is implicit within DP, because you need to ensure the staff are complying with legislation relating to data handling,

Governance as a broad term/function tends to be a bit woolly ime. Would you actually know what your specific role entails.... I'd rather have a role where you have some clear goals and expectations.

sorry instill good practice

@daisychain01

It's company secretariat and code of conduct. If that's any help.
