Apprenticeship

So I've been out of work for 10 years, the first 8 years I was with my kids dad, he worked and I stayed home, then we split and for the last couple years I've been a single parent not working. I want to go back to work now, desperately, and I want to work in funeral care. I was thinking maybe an apprenticeship. There aren't any currently advertised in my area, but I was wondering if I was to write to a funeral home in my town, to ask about it, how would I go about it? What would I write? Having not worked for so long I'm out of touch. Any advice?

I think quite a lot of apprenticeships are for 16-24 year olds, so you may have to do some research. And be prepared to work for pennies for a couple of years if you do get one.

Oh really I wasn't aware there was an age on it. Yes I'm prepared to work for a lot less than minimum wage for a bit if it means I'm getting into the career I'm interested in.

Yes, the govt subsidises our apprentices if they are 16-24 so we choose that age group because they cost us less.

Can you focus on the fact that you are more emotionally mature, more aware and therefore more able to cope with people who are likely to be upset? Also Organisational skills, admin etc.

The employers levy pays the apprentices, not the employer - there is no age limit to this. Your apprentices don't cost you anything mintjula - you do though get a bit of extra funding for 16-24 year olds - so if that's your employers reasons for only having apprentices in that age group it's because your employer sees them as a bit of a cash cow.....

I'm sure you're not in Kent, but this is an example of an apprenticeship in funerary care - might give you an idea of what;s invoklved:

Thank you @titchy that's exactly what I'm looking for. Unfortunately no I'm not in Kent I'm in a small town in the south west. I have 2 funeral homes within 1 min walk from me, but I do drive so willing to travel a little bit.
