Overtime and notice period ? Do I still have to work the hours?

Would love advice 😀
I work and am contracted to 10 hours a week over 2 days . I am doing lots of overtime in the run up to Christmas .
I want to give my notice in at work today . Can I say I will just work my contracted hours in my notice period ? Or do I also still have to work the extra hours on the rota?
Thank you

If you don't want the over time i guess they can't force you to do it.

I would however work any that may otherwise leave them short, so if you've agreed to work this weekend/ next week an evening ect. But that's just me! Anything past that I wouldn't if you don't need or want the hours

I think that if you are already in the rota to do extra hours you need to do them. If you're not already in the rota to do any, then you can say you're not available to do any

They start on 25th November the extra hours .

It is a small company with minimal staff . However ,I think I have overstretched myself with other commitments in the run up to Christmas . I am working more or less every day ( inc weekends) up until 20
Dec.
I do have another job , that I am keeping in a hotel.

I guess I need to know legally . I might say I can do certain other dates and not all of the overtime .
I am guessing it may impact any future references?

Depends whether overtime is voluntary or compulsory. What does your contract say?

Charliescar · 09/11/2019 09:46

Hi Flowery,
It doesn’t say anything about that . It is a small family run business. It has 2 employees. By handing my notice in , I will still leave them short staffed after my notice period as well as I am on the rota with overtime until Xmas .

Ok well if there’s nothing in your contract saying you are expected to work more than your 10 hours then you can refuse. However as you rightly identify, leaving them in the lurch when you’ve already agreed to do the hours may affect how glowing your reference might be.

I would suggest coming to a compromise and reducing the amount of overtime you do so it’s more manageable for you and doesn’t leave them completely in the lurch.
