Can someone explain how it works?

I don't get paid if I'm off I've never had more than a few days can I claim SSP or get some other help? I can't return to work just now but can't afford not to work either.

Depends entirely on your contract of employment.. What does it say?

I would need to read it but I don't have it with me. I could get dp to get it for me later.

Since the OP is asking about SSP, what is in the contract is (mostly) irrelevant.

Take a look here (click through the pages or use the links at the top to see if you are eligible, how to claim, etc.)

You can claim it but not until day 4 of being off

SSP is statutory not contractual. It has a three day waiting period so only pays from the fourth day of sickness, although the waiting periods can be linked if close together. Entitlement is subject to a minimum income, roughly £120 a week.

If you are employed and earn more than £118 per week then you are entitled to £94.25 per week Statutory Sick Pay (minus tax and NI). The first 3 days off sick are unpaid.

You can get this for up to 28 weeks.
