This is an issue for my partner, he worked at a small café as a chef with a husband and wife team, it became very fraught there between the husband and wife and not a nice atmosphere, he was also doing all the chef duties on minimum wage so after just under a year he left.
He was contacted by the husband and they asked if he could come back , he was promised a higher salary they had not been able to find anyone as good as him and he decided to give it another go , cut a long story short it was much the same atmosphere he was doing everything it was extremely busy and after a month he told them he made a mistake coming and left again.
Many people in our community knew he worked there and a friend went there the other day and while there asked if he was there, they said no he doesn't work here , he was very difficult and didn't get along with staff so he is gone ,
I am really annoyed about this as he left of his own accord and surely they should not be speaking about him to anyone and saying this , it seems very unprofessional and also seems like defamation, god only knows what they will do if asked for a reference.
Any advice what we should do?

Dont know the legalities but I'd go in there with your friend and say you've heard this story, please stop this or you will seek legal advice.

Thanks it may be difficult as I may not have worded it properly because the friend is a colleague from a community volunteer scheme that my partner volunteers at for a number of years and they do not see each other socially but are on friendly terms but not outside of that

It's not nice and its gossip. Does your dh know. Would either of you feel strong enough to actually speak to the person. It sounds like where I live. Small minded tittle tattle that is best ignored.

not much you can do to be honest, especially as its one persons word against the other and nothing written down. Best to just move on and source someone else to be a reference.

I'd put it in writing to the cafe owners and ask them to stop telling untruths about the reason for him leaving. . No need to threaten legal action but an unemotional letter pointing out that you know what they've been saying should hopefully put a stop to it.

The thing is op, and the reason this is difficult, is that may well be their view.
