Should I attend second interview

I just wanted some outside opinions.
I work for a large trust. They had a new post opening and I was asked to apply. I was even told that the job was mine and urged to get my cv in asap. I did and was told it would be one interview and that wasn't any other candidates.
I went for my interview and felt I did quite well, answered all the questions some so well they said I preempted some of theirs. Anyway I was told today that I would now have a SECOND interview and feedback to date was they had never had anyone ask about progression on the first interview (after my being told on the q.t that I'd only have one interview) and the fact that I did was a negative!!
In my current role they renege on many issues and today's second interview bombshell made me think this is happening again. I can't help but think a second candidate has slipped in.... I also feel really upset that I was told before applying that the post was mine if I applied and that my ONE interview would be a formality.
Would you attend the second interview? Part of me wants to tell them I have changed my mind and to tactfully point out how the boundaries have changed and no one acknowledged the fact. Another bone of contention is my entire staff room knows I've applied, fine if I'd told anyone BUT I didn't tell a soul! Again would you go for the second interview or should I tell them to politely stuff it lol
Just to add the new post would be a sidestep and not a promotion as such so I was dithering on applying anyway, it was my employers who twisted my arm. I could perfectly happily stay where I am

Correction on line 3 - 4 I was told no one else applied

Staying where you are might be a bit tricky if you've just thrown a tantrum over them following due process in recruitment matters.

Just sounds like your ego talking. Put it back in its box and go to the second interview like a mature and rational adult.

heidismum1 · 25/09/2019 22:04

Thanks Katalavente, I haven't thrown a tantrum and have no intentions of doing so. I would never tell them why I didn't go for the second interview I would just pull out quietly and say I'd reconsidered. I am honestly disappointed at having been told to apply then the changes in the process. They do this with everything and tbh I had considered leaving as a result as goal posts change even over the stationary order lol

Agree with katalavenet, in attending 2nd interview as it would make you look bad. Also as you said a large trust, whoever told you it would be a formality didnt have the authority to do

EBearhug · 26/09/2019 01:46

You need to attend, as it's internal. Just make sure any concerns you have about the role get answered.

They shouldn't have told you that the role was 'yours' before interview. NHS recruitment procedures are very regimented, they don't do quick hires.

Defenestrator · 26/09/2019 10:17

I should have thought asking about "progression" shows that you are interested in building a career and taking opportunities to better yourself. Also shows commitment to the Trust. It's odd they are framing it as negative.

Management in the NHS is notoriously bad, look at the number of posts on this board. My experience with poor NHS management nearly killed me and has left me with PTSD.

I also feel really upset that I was told before applying that the post was mine if I applied and that my ONE interview would be a formality.

OP just because someone says something as outrageous as this, doesn't mean you have to 100% accept it as gospel truth.!

a) promise you the role before you've even had the interview, that would ring alarm bells to me for a start.

b) tell you upfront that there would only be one interview. Ye God's if that was said in my Government dept there would be absolute hell to pay.

This sounds like a complete basket case of a recruitment situation. Go along for the 2nd interview, what will it cost. But recognise that the recruitment team (or was it management) were not acting correctly and don't take everything said to you like "you've got the job" even before the interview is necessarily accurate. That life in some Gov't organisations - not all I hasten to add !

I'd go for a second interview. You never know why it has to happen and could be generally out of the blue or unexpected. If word is out you applied then word is out about the job. If someone else has unexpectedly thrown their hat into the ring, they most likely can't not interview that person.

blackcat86 · 29/09/2019 06:55

I'd go for the interview and give it my all but also secretly be seeking out other jobs. I cant stand working at places like that and being mucked about

Teateaandmoretea · 29/09/2019 06:58

Never ever assume a job is yours before you have it in writing. There are all sorts of things that can go wrong including them just deciding not to hire for it. I don't understand why you had feedback about asking a reasonable question but interviews are a strange world and you've got to 2nd interview stage anyway so just take it with a pinch of salt.

If you want the job then go for the 2nd interview if not then don't. No one is going to analyse exactly what is going on in your head.

I've said it before and I'll say it again going for interviews and not getting the job is a normal life experience. Interviews are stressful particularly when you know the people but you can't let that hold you back in life.

NoProblem123 · 30/09/2019 22:15

Go for the interview and give it your best shot.
Interviews are 2 way conversations and you are interviewing them as much as they are interviewing you.
Once you get offered it then you decide if you actually want it.
