Access to work/reasonable adjustments

I have facet joint arthritis which means I find it difficult to stand or sit for long periods of time. Sitting needs to be in a good supportive chair. I asked for a OH assessment for equipment which was done about 6 weeks ago - she made recommendations for equipment. I work for a local authority and the HR are inefficient and very slow.
HR have only just advised my line manager that I will need to contact access to work for them to make an assessment before any equipment will be agreed or purchased. It was only because I chased it that I got told this so I did a self referral on Tuesday.
In the meantime my back pain at work is getting worse and worse to the point that on Monday I hardly slept as a result.
I am trying so hard to stay at work and get the adjustments that I need to do mt job but they keep putting obstacles in the way .
I feel like just going to my doctor and asking to be signed off until it is sorted.
Any advice?

Unfortunately Access to Work does take a bit of time. If you can't sit on the current chair without being in pain then just get signed off. As it's disability related and because you are waiting for appropriate equipment you shouldn't be penalised for the absence.
