Leaving?

Have been in current job for 2 months. Wibu to resign to take up job offer of same job, slightly longer commute but £7000 per year higher salary?
Is longer commute worth £7000 per year more? Will it look bad leaving here after just 8 weeks? Am I mad to commute when there will be heavier traffic.... I really can't decide. Any thoughts appreciated !

How much will the commute cost in terms of extra petrol, increased train ticket prices, increased time and thus childcare cover? Does that come to more less whatever £7K is after tax? What about the overall packages? Are there benefits like private health, or extra holiday?

How much longer will the extra commute be time-wise? I know I don't really want longer than an hour commute, but I know others who will do more, and it can depend on whether you have to do it every day or have the option of working from home, or if it's a single journey or one broken up between walk, bus, train, tube, walk or something.

What else differentiates the two jobs? What opportunities do they have for training, progression, things like that? Which of these aspects matter most to you?

If this second job wasn't on the table, do feel you're settling into the 2 month job well, getting on with the people and so on, or would you be considering you might need to start looking again anyway?

We can't make the decision for you - jobs aren't just about money alone, so you need to think about your values and what you want from work, and what you need from work and life (which changes at different life stages.)

Everything EBear said ^. Obviously £7k is quite a nice extra payrise but it depends on so many other factors. For me I would be fine with 20 mins extra if it took me from 10 mins commute to 30 mins, but not if it was from 1 hour to 1 hour 20 for instance. And it makes a big difference if it's 20 mins sitting on a comfy train where I'll get a seat and can read or do emails or whatever, compared to to 20 mins on the tube in rush hour or waiting at a cold bus stop in winter for an unreliable bus or sitting in gridlock on a busy motorway....

And all other things being equal I wouldn't particularly want to leave a new job 2 months in, although not disastrous of course. Can you use the offer of this other job to negotiate a slightly higher rate at existing job when your probation finishes, if you like it there otherwise? Feels cheeky of course as you are so new, but if they really are massively underpaying reasonable market rate for the job I think you are justified to ask...

I did this earlier this year but the extra commute turned out to be a nightmare and even with extra benefits like private health insurance and car allowance it wasn't worth it. I only stuck it a few months.

It isn't £7K, you need to consider the money you are actually paid into your bank account ie less any deductions.

Ask yourself if the new job is worth (rough example) £350 - 400 / month which doesn't include any extra expenses and hassle you need to incur because it's a longer distance from home.

Personally quality of life is a lot more important, in fact it's non-negotiable, so if a change like this meant I couldn't go to the gym or spent less quality time with my family I wouldn't consider the change worth that sacrifice. But not knowing your financial situation nor your family circumstances, means I can't say what's right for you, only you can!

Commute for both jobs is by car and same distance in miles. New job will take about 15 mins longer though due to traffic. Jobs are identical in every way apart from £7k more and the 15 mins longer journey
We could really do with the extra money at the minute

Sorry I'm drip feeding ...
Job 1 commute takes 35 mins no traffic. Rural area and I arrange to see clients at home which is a lot of miles due to large rural country area covered by the company. For example today i have 2 clients to see at home, i will do 90 miles not including commute. Mileage is paid and is a good rate.
Job 2 commute would be about 50 mins due to traffic . It's in a very large town area. Once there I would be seeing clients at home also, but less miles to cover as the area is more populated so for example today i could see clients at home entailing 20 miles but as more built area have to allow for traffic. Mileage paid at same rate as job 1
No chance of negotiating extra money in job 1. Perks and package and hours exactly the same. Well apart from job 1 office is a bit old and job 2 office is more swanky. Not really bothered by that though

Another thing to consider is what percentage of your salary is it. If you're currently on £21K, then it's 50% extra, which would make a massive difference, but if you're on £70K, it's only 10%, and while nice, isn't quite so noticeable.

daisychain01 · 13/09/2019 07:18

I'm not sure why you need us to decide if an extra 15 mins in a car is worth £7000. If indeed that's the only difference. That's a completely different kettle of fish to your open ended scenario of a "longer commute" which could have been potentially being an extra 2 hours. The other detail you've given isn't relevant if your concern is just about your commute because your mileage rate is the same at both jobs.

So, £7K + 15 mins in the car each way + same role and mileage expenses + swanky office sounds like a good deal.

If it's in a large town area could you arrange your appointments at times when you could leave your car at work and use public transport- better for the environment and less mileage/ wear and tear on your car.

Daisychain I don't need you to decide.
I asked for people's thoughts is all. Thanks
