I am a junior auditor. My line manager and I travel once a month across the UK to audit companies. This involves long days, early starts, sometimes overnight stays and I usually get back home no earlier than 10pm.
This is my line manager's first "real job" - she was always a contractor before and I think she's retained some odd and unhealthy habits which she is trying to force on to me.
I'm trying to get a balanced view because before this I was in a very free role where I was expected to work independently, meet deadlines and no one gave a damn about how I did it as long as the work was completed.
So as things stand:
If we get home 2 hours later than we usually would do then we can start 30 minutes later the following day.
However if we work from home we have to start at the usual time. Last time after an overnight visit I got home just before midnight and was expected to be online and working at 9am. I was exhausted and demotivated.
She used to make digs about how I was "the only one in the team not to eat lunch at your desk". We were a team of 3. The other person left after 5 months and has not been replaced. I was firm in that I would be taking the lunch hour I was entitled to. She stopped after this colleague resigned.
We had an audit in a very rural location once where buses were one per hour and took 1.5 hours to get to the station I had to get to. She refused to allow me a taxi as £30 was "too much". She waited with me for about 40 minutes for the bus to arrive. There was traffic so the bus ended up taking closer to 2 hours. I wish I'd just paid for a taxi myself, but hindsight is 20/20 I suppose.
She texts me about work when I am on annual leave or off sick.
She came in herself when she was very ill - sneezed and coughed everywhere, I don't think she actually did any work all morning. Eventually a senior colleague ordered her home.
She disapproves of me claiming lunch and dinner expenses, it's always a huge song and dance and everything is scrutinized. One of the first claims I submitted had 2 lemonades on the dinner bill and she would only approve one. At first she said I only needed one drink so why did I order 2? And then when I said I was thirsty she accused me of trying to use company money to pay for someone else's drink
I just feel like I'm battling with her over a number of petty things and it's making me resentful.
