How to tell employers you've got a new job?

I know the answer should be obvious Grin

I've been offered a new job, not 100% sure whether I'll accept it yet. But I've worked in my current role, in a small family business, for 14 years, and it's the only role I've had! The thought of telling them I'm leaving terrifies me, and with staff holidays/Christmas coming I'm well aware of the negative effect it will have if I leave ☹️

How did you tell your long term employers you were going? Were you nervous? What's the best way to go about it?

I would tell my line manger I person ASAP. I would then write a really nice resignation letter (once you have signed your new contract).

Announce it like it's good news and acknowledge that they may be inconvenienced but expect them to still be HAPPY for you!

Don't be apologetic.

Don't be apologetic

That's the part I'd struggle with I think! Feeling like I need to acknowledge and apologise for my dropping them in the shit 😬

Sounds like it may be quite emotional for you. Have your letter written and think of the reasons you are leaving. Stay positive and look forward to your new challenge!
Good luck.

Don't tell them anything until you have a contract and have signed it.

Write your resignation letter, sign it and scan it in so you have an electronic copy.

Then just tell your line manager that you have decided to move on for a new challenge and hand them your resignation letter. Right after the discussion, email them the electronic copy of the resignation letter and summarise the discussion. Confirm in the email when your last day will be.

Don't need to make it an emotional thing when you actually resign. You will have time in the notice period to discuss your move and how you feel about leaving, if you want to. Good luck.

Just be factual. As mentioned, don't resign until you've received and signed the new contract. Then have a letter along the lines of:
Dear employer,
I am resigning from my position as [job role] at [your company]. As required by my contract, I am givng one month's notice. [Check the details; at my company, you'd have to give 12 weeks notice with your length of service.] Subject to agreement, my final working day will be 20th September 2019 [or whatever it works out at.]

Yours sincerely,
ohdearwhattodo.
