NHS - band 6 interview

Hi, I have an interview coming up for a band 6 governance role and seeking tips from anyone in the know! I have worked in healthcare but not in NHS so not sure what to expect. I have to give a presentation but the topic will only be given to me at the interview. I'm nervous about this particularly, and a bit rusty so any help/pointers would be gratefully received! Oh and I'm going for a visit beforehand .. any insight as to what that might be like?

What sort of governance? Are you a registrant?

HappyHammy · 06/08/2019 22:11

like pp asks, what sort of governance? are you a nurse? have they not given you any idea of the subject for the presentation or what format they want it in.

What’s the role? I would research the trust, read the cqc reports, look at website it will include trust values and similar. Show you’ve put some effort in.

I would read through the job description, is it information governance? there's often information there about what is expected from the role.

I'm not a clinician, it's an administrative role. Thanks for the suggestions from PPs on what to research.
Is an NHS interview likely to be competency based questions?

Read the corporate information and recent press stories

Remember the rule of threes for a presentation on the hoof:

Think of three things, these could be chronological (eg past, present, future) or volume (eg impact on one person, on a team, on an organisation) or perspective (eg my views, views of internal stakeholders, views of external stakeholders) etc. It’s a quick way to structure things

Keep the presentation short

what is the actual job title, does it say what department it is for?

ElevenOhFive · 06/08/2019 22:25

Yes, a band 6 role is very likely to be a competency based interview eg describe a time when you went the extra mile, describe a situation where a client/customer is not accepting of/unhappy with the advice you are giving them, describe a time when you made a difference to your service area etc. Sometimes the questions have several parts to allow you to develop your answer (what did you learn/what would you do differently). I have found the STAR model helpful in the past (Situation Task Action Result) to help me use real-life examples, talk about what I did personally and avoid generalising.

Hope that is of some help and hope it all goes well.

In my experience (senior manager in large hospital) most NHS organisations have moved away from competency based interviews and are structuring interviews around the trust's core values. I would definitely research these for the recruiting trust.
Depending on the type of governance role I would prep examples that showed a strong track record of implementing/developing polices. I would expect to talk about compliance with national standards and regulation, eg. CQC, NHS England and NHS Improvement, major national audits (if this is part of the role).
I would also, depending on the scope of the role, advise reading up on Duty of Candour, complaints management and incident reporting as part of the culture of a safe and learning organisation. Read up the recommendations following Francis report and be prepared to talk about your experience of managing risk.

Yeah, use the STARR format for NHS competency based interviews, plenty on google. The second r is for reflection, not all google posts tell you that, some only do Result, ie Reflection is what would you have done differently. Bound to be questions about what you’d bring to the role, why you want the job etc too Good luck.

Massive thanks to all who replied to my post, such helpful information, I'm so grateful for all your responses. I have a visit before the interview so I will use this to get more info on the role and will do lots of research and take all your points into account before the interview. Huge thanks.
