How many hours?

My 16 year old has just been employed on a temp contract with ASDA.
He is due to work 4 hours on a Sunday and 5 hours on a Friday.

I have just read that he can only work 2 hours on a Sunday at his age.

If this is right how can he work for 4 hours?

Because it's school holidays
I think the 2 hour rule is term time
( but I'm no expert)

No that this is very helpful. But until someone more knowledgeable comes:

Surely that can't be right?
Below is for a between 15 and 16 year old. So surely more is allowed if over 16?

This is on the government website.

The rules on the government website apply to children who are under school leaving age. Your son is now over the school leaving age so the restriction no longer applies. He can work more than 2 hours on Sunday.

It’s 2 hours on a Sunday for 15 to 16 year olds, so at 16 he can.

Wasrelaxing · 06/08/2019 20:48

Ah ok, I was reading it as age inclusive. Thank you.

That is not correct. It is age inclusive but it doesn't include all 16 year olds. Indeed, it doesn't include some 15 year olds.

As per my previous post, the rules apply until the child reaches school leaving age. In England, that means they apply until the last Friday in June if the child will be 16 before the end of the summer holidays. Depending on which month the child was born, they may be 15 or 16 when the rules cease to apply.

For example, if the child turns 16 in October they will still be subject to the restrictions until the following June. However, if the child turns 16 in August the rules will cease to apply to them on the last Friday in June even though they are only 15 at that point.

This is set out in the relevant legislation (Children and Young Persons Act 1933 and Education Act 1996).
