School Support Staff Resigning - what would be the calculation for final pay?

I work Term Time Only in a school. I joined immediately after the Easter holidays in 2016.

I am not paid for the school holidays but my salary for the year is divided by 12 and paid monthly.

I have just been offered a new job elsewhere to start on 1st Sept and have just handed in my notice (I am contracted to 4 weeks notice period) stating that it is with effect from 31 Aug. I’m not at work now as it’s the school summer holidays.

In addition to 3 full years’ service, which all would match up neatly, I obviously have this period of 4 or so months which has the big chunk of summer holidays in it.

Does anyone know the exact calculation to enable me to know what would be correct salary wise at the end of August please?

There shouldn’t be any calculation needed. You get paid x amount over the year from 1/9 to 31/8. This money is for you to work 39 weeks between September and end July. You have completed your year’s work and in August you will receive the last of your payments covering that work.

Term time work paid over 12 months only becomes complicated if you leave mid-academic year.

LongIslandIcedSummer · 30/07/2019 18:31

But I joined mid academic year so doesn’t that cause the same complication?

Not mid this academic year though?

In a school I would expect the 'year' you are being paid for at any given time to be the current academic one.

If your 'year' runs differently, there might be a calculation yes. Does your contract/relevant policy not give any information about calculation of salary, when it runs from and to, and what happens on leaving?

LongIslandIcedSummer · 30/07/2019 19:06

Nothing in my contract to cover this scenario and I’ve just been paid one twelfth of my annual salary every month since joining.

It’s an independent school if that makes any difference.

Thanks for working it through with me...

At my school there would be a complex calculation based on the number of days worked, number of inset days, number of closure days since the anniversary of your start date. At my school with an anniversary of end of April and a resignation date of 31st August would probably mean you have received proportionately too much time off and therefore a negative final pay adjustment. I would ask HR for a copy of the calculation as soon as possible so you can budget for that final pay.

LongIslandIcedSummer · 31/07/2019 02:27

Thank you both. I want to get an independent estimate/calculation to compare to what comes from the school hence my question.

I am confident in payroll calculations but not within the education sector where term time only working, inset days and school holidays apply.

Bumping...
Does anyone know school payroll and what the calculation needed for this is please?

Well I left my term time job after 14 years I handed notice in in July stating I was finishing end of August I got paid till end of August with no major calculations needed. I’d worked when I should and had that needed sorting.

LongIslandIcedSummer · 10/08/2019 23:16

Someone on Mumsnet must do payroll/HR for schools and know the answer to this

BrewCake perhaps coffee and cake will tempt them this waySmile

I don’t understand what you think is going to be wrong. You get paid a month behind you’ve officially worked August so you get paid August and that’s it. There is nothing else to take into account that I can see.

LongIslandIcedSummer · 11/08/2019 17:34

I’ve been off all of August.

What there is to take into account is how much of that leave I have accrued so I know what is due in my final pay.

Flowery's posts are spot on. It is irrelevant that you joined mid way through the year in 2016. You will be paid one twelfth of your normal annual salary at the end of August and that will be your final payment

flowery · 12/08/2019 17:13

I would expect any adjustment arising out of starting mid-year to have been done in that particular year. This academic year you've done the full year, so there shouldn't be any need for an adjustment.

But when you get details of your final pay, if it's not your normal salary, ask them how they calculated it, so you can see if it makes sense.

LongIslandIcedSummer · 13/08/2019 22:54

There was no adjustment at the end of the first (partial) academic year that I did. Hence my thinking it must have to roll over.

Sounds like I just need to wait for the payslip as you say Flowery - there doesn’t seem to be a known calculation in advance.

Will update when I get it. Thanks for all the replies.

Relieved to say that I’ve just had my payslip and have been paid (or will be at month end) my normal salary.
