Teaching as a new career

Can anyone please help set my mind at rest a little please? My poor DH has had a rough time career wise. He was made medically redundant from a physically exhausting job and decided he wants to teach. He has been accepted on a uni course following his 3rd interview and has started studying. The worry is that i read a thread recently where there were 26 pages of 95% negative comments about teaching and that there is a massive burn-out rate and therefore shortage of teachers esp in IT, maths and science. Teachers are leaving the profession in droves. This is basically DH's only chance to get himself a proper career. He already has the degree and is studying computer science to teach at secondary level and he gets a full bursary.
He has the makings of a great teacher. Can anyone say anything positive about teaching or is it all just doom and gloom?
Thanks x

Well, many people stay in teaching for decades. I suppose, as with any career, you need to pick your employer and workplace wisely.

You should ask for this to be moved to staffroom OP.

Can I ask why 3 interviews? That's quite unusual. I hope it works out for him. If he is into IT he will need to prepare himself for really shit resources!

It can be the best job in the world! There are lots of positives- it's just that the negatives can feel overwhelming. I still love it.
I wish him all the best.

Thanks for the responses.

@Piggywaspushed.. i couldn't find the staff room page. Well he was unsuccessful with the first two places he applied to (a school and a college) and then the uni accepted him. He thought the other two candidates being interviewed the same day were not very effective in their presentions and yet still got in and i was worried the uni were just desperate for people to put forward. DH put in loads of work into his presentation and may as well not have bothered seeing as they took them all on!

grafittiartist..thank you Smile

I taught Secondary age students for 38 years and loved the challenge. For the right person it’s a great, rewarding job.
However, if I were you I would be very concerned that your DH was made medically redundant from a physically demanding job.
Teaching is very demanding, physically and mentally.
Often the reasons why so many new teachers leave within 5 years, as you are aware. I’d consider the whole proposition very carefully.
