Job offer whilst pregnant

I’m 2 months pregnant and I applied for a permanent job as I’m currently on a fixed term contract and they have offered it to me. I was in two minds going for the interview because of being pregnant but really wanted to give it a go. The recruiter gave me really good feedback on the phone and also said my current manager put in a good word for me. I now feel incredibly guilty that I’m pregnant and haven’t made him or my current line manager aware. I’m also on 3 months notice where I work and they won’t shorten it for me so when I join my new work i will be 5 months pregnant. What should I do? Be honest and tell the truth that I’m pregnant? I really want the job but really worried about burning bridges if I’m not honest about my pregnancy before accepting the role but I’m also nervous about them retracting the offer. I wanted to wait until my 12 week scan which is another month away before telling anyone as it’s such early days. Feel so awful about letting people down.

The occupational health is required before they can give me the unconditional offer

Well as long as the offer isn’t conditional upon you not being pregnant, which obviously isn’t the case, you’re fine.

Explorers10 · 24/07/2019 18:13

That’s true just don’t feel ready to disclose it Sad

If they needed to get rid of you for any reason would they feel guilty? No. They look after themselves first and you should do the same. Its an exchange of labour for money, thats it. Employers arent doing us a favour by giving maternity leave, they are required by law.

Thank you, you are right. The most important thing is health of me and the baby. If the job doesn’t work out, then I just have to get another job

Wanted to update you all and thank you all for your advice. Had my 12 week scan yesterday, all is well with baby. Told my new boss today really been dreading and worrying about his reaction. He was really nice! He said they are a workplace that believe in treating women fairly. I said I would work right up to my due date but he said if I get too tired too near then I can think about taking mat leave earlier. Also said the job was mine and not to worry and if I wanted to come back reduced hours. I’m totally gobsmacked about how nice he was! I now feel really happy that I can enjoy my pregnancy and not feel bad about starting a new job Smile

What a lovely outcome. Your boss sounds great and now you can relax and enjoy (as much as possible!) your pregnancy without fearing for your job :)

Thanks for coming back and updating!

Wow. That's great. Just shows there are some decent people out there in the world still.

redexpat · 14/08/2019 21:20

Oh that is a good update!

Explorers10 · 14/08/2019 21:41

I know I genuinely cant believe it, I feel so lucky and wish I could have had the job longer before going on mat leave! He is such a decent man and he was actually really excited about my news, I’m looking forward to starting my new job and working for him Grin

@Explorers10 just found this thread while searching maternity pay. I’m currently ttc but also looking for a new job but I’m worried about maternity pay, how did it work out for you? I also work for the NHS

Explorers10 · 13/08/2020 15:47

@DNpink82

It is difficult isn’t it as TTC is not easy and I didn’t want to put my life on hold in case I couldn’t get pregnant. It worked out fine as I went from one NHS organisation to another so got the NHS maternity pay as have more than 12 months NHS service. I was not eligible for statutory maternity pay as I had not been with the new NHS organisation long enough. I applied for maternity allowance and had to send in payslips to DWP to prove I had been in paid employment the whole time I had been pregnant. Maternity allowance is the same pay as statutory maternity pay just had to apply for it as I met the criteria. Hope that helps.

Brilliant thank you, I was having a look and the figures looked the same but I wasn’t 100% so shouldn’t make any difference for me either as I have years NHS service. Thank you for taking the time to reply, I hope your loving maternity leave xx

Explorers10 · 13/08/2020 20:21
