I think I've been underpaid for months!

My full time salary is £46,100 for 37 hours a week.

At the beginning of the year I reduced my hours to 32 per week making my pro rata salary around £39,800

I pay 7% into my pension and £90 to add my partner to the private health insurance.

Latest payslip was £1,990 per month.

Until this month I was claiming £243 p/m in childcare vouchers and my pay was around £1,850 p/m

Mentioned this to a good friend and she thought I should be bringing home at least £2,300 p/m even with the deductions.

Tried an online calculator thing and she seems to be right!

Is this definitely right before I go into work all guns blazing tomorrow? Any payroll people?

I would check each of those elements against your payslip, should be able to see if there is an error. Also check your tax code, which is probably lower anyway if you have medical benefits.

You don't have to go in 'guns blazing'. Just ask Mr/Ms Payroll person nicely to check for you. There is bound to be an explanation or solution. They probably aren't ripping you off on purpose. Just ask.

Were you previously paid for an hour lunch break (so 42 hours) but now you're not?

I don't think it's matters if it's right or not tbh.

Just go and ask, without the blazing guns, and payroll will be able to check it for you.

It doesn’t look right to me. Based on 116L with your pension and medical care a take home pay of £1850 is more like an annual salary of £32,000.
I would check your payslip, have a look what the gross monthly amount is, check your tax code, make sure there’s not a higher pension % being taken too. Speak to payroll, it sounds like a mistake but it’ll be easily rectified without making a fuss.

Using the salary / 52 x 4 method I thought pat was calculated on, it does look as though you are being underpaid, fairly significantly!

Did you get a bonus paid in April? I ask because we have that, it pushes the tax up in month 1, then massively reduced in the next few months, and normal around Aug/Sep. So my pay in May is higher than my pay in Oct, but it evens out over the year.

It does sound like there is something not quite right to be honest.

I did think it was odd I was only bringing home what I earned on a £30k salary but I thought the pension, reduced hours and previously the childcare vouchers were the reason.

I won't really be 'all guns blazing' - it's just a shame me and DP have argued about the impact my reduced hours have had on family finances not realising my pay was wrong

Add up the pension deduction and your monthly salary. Multiply by 12. That’s what you are getting paid. It doesn’t match your original salary for losing 5 hours.

Just seen your payslip - it's your basic salary that's out.

Looks like they've prorated your basic salary by 75% which is too much. Are you working 8 hours over 4 days plus 1 hour unpaid lunch ie in the office for 9 hours. As it looks like they may have calculated it based on 7 paid hours x 4 days.

A bonus would not normally count as your gross pay. Looks like they have calculated your gross salary incorrectly.
