I got a job a M&S yesterday!

It is more hours than I wanted really, but am going to give it a go. I will be working in the foods dept. afternoons/evenings.

I would like the real lowdown on working there, the pros and cons, what you like about it, what you dont like etc.

Also, are they a family friendly company? I have a young son so am concerned if he is ever ill what their reaction would be.

Am really looking foward to it, not havng worked outside the home for 6 years.

Thanks!

i'm a manager for m&s and find it very family friendly. they like employing mums. i work afternoons/evenings too. is it a large store or small store? in the small stores you will find staff have worked there about 50 years and are rather stuck in their ways. on the upside though, those stores have a very family feel, they all know each other and probably met their husband/wives there and half their family works there. it's the sort of company where people recommend their friends and family to work there.

if it's a large store like mine, which i prefer, then you get a broader mix of people, some students, some mums, some semi retired, some very career minded etc etc. the good thing about a large store is that there's always someone to swap a shift with you if needed, they're open longer so you have more shift options, there are more options for overtime if you want it, and they can better accomodate pregnancies/maternity etc etc. your child being sick is not a big deal. it isn't held against you, unless of course it becomes that you're off work very very often. but then again if your child is seriously ill then there are options like special leave, parental leave etc etc. they are a big company so have no excuse not to follow employment law and accomodate people's needs. this is why it's attractive for mums to work there.

hope you enjoy it, ask me anything!

Thanks again.
