Does a month's notice mean a calendar month, or 4 weeks?

It means a month. Otherwise the notice period would be four weeks.

Notice starts the day after it's given so 6/8/19.

But if you know you have holiday due then you just take that off and tell them that your last working day will be x.

There's usually some annual leave to take into account too. Unless there's some kind of massive project that must be finished before you leave employers are usually OK to use those to slightly shorten notice. So last time I resigned I wrote something like:
"As per my contract of employment my notice period will expire on DATE - However as I have 6.5 days of Annual Leave in hand I hope you will agree that my last day in the office will be DATE with the rest of my notice. period being paid Annual Leave."

One place I worked, it was “an unbroken calendar month”. So if I resigned on 3 July, I couldn’t leave until 31 August. it applied to the most junior people, riding to 3 unbroken calendar months for the most senior - do in my example, I couldn’t leave until 31 October!!
