Can I quit on an open ended basis?

Hi there

I am at the end of my tether with work due to stress and unfeasible workload. I am having trouble finding something else (I want pt work and there is not much around in my area). The stress has got to the point where I am seriously considering quitting even though I dont have another job to go to.

Is it possible to quit but say that I will stay until they replace me / or I find a new job? Or do you have to give a specific time frame? And if so, say I give three months but find a new job in a month do I have to honour the 3 months (my contractual notice period is 1 month).

Gah, I just dont know. But having burst into tears in front of my children this evening I dont think I can carry on like this much longer ☹

Any advice welcome

If your contractual notice period is a month then you give a month. If you are happy to stay for longer then you can say so, but you can't bank on them wanting you to do it.

Often once they know you are in the mindset to leave they prefer you to do so asap. However it rather depends on circumstances and role.

They can't start trying to replace you until you've confirmed you are leaving, so you need to actually resign, or find something new before telling them.

What you could do is resign and give three months' notice, but then if you find something sooner and want to leave sooner, give a month's notice at that point. As long as you give at least a month, it's fine to shorten it.

But that's not really of value unless replacing you will take ages.

I would just continue looking for something new, and then either resign once you've found something, or if it really gets to the point you can't take any more, resign with a month's notice without having found something.

i wouldn't overcomplicate by trying to give open-ended notice, or long notice then shorten it.
