Working Time Regulations

LadyBahBahBah · 30/06/2019 21:41

I was under the impression 11 hours rest between leaving work and starting again but have recently been told it's 8 hours.
I work in hospitality and am expected to finish work at 1.00 am (possibly later) and be back at work by 9.00 am next day.

I have a minimum 35 minutes commute traffic permitting.
Any advice gratefully received!

Tourism is allowed flexibility in how the regulations are applied.

LadyBahBahBah · 30/06/2019 22:11

Thanks @mummymayhem18 that mentions both shifts not exceeding 13 hours but I am expected to work more than 16 with no regards for my commute/sleep/!

That is pretty awful. But feel for your manager, who has probably been asked to sign even this away as they 'choose' (right!) their hours.

LadyBahBahBah · 30/06/2019 22:23

Not sure what your pointsin @Jaxhog I'm on minimum wage - not management and if they choose to work silly hours on their management salary that's up to them.
I'm here for advice because I'm minimum wage and I don't want to be exploited

This is a 'naice' establishment btw if that makes any difference!

You don't even get to sign anything away it will be do as you're told or no more shifts. All pretty standard in the industry, I've got a long list of stories I routinely worked 7 day weeks and at weekends normal was 12pm-2am on a Friday 7am-2am on a Saturday and 7am till 6pm. A 60 hour week was considered easy and I topped 100 hours in a week more than once.

To add if you don't want to be exploited get out of hospitality and tourism, the better the establishment the worse it is. Most managers wont be on much more than minimum wage either.

HigaDequasLuoff · 01/07/2019 04:58

You are being exploited, yes. I hope you find something better soon.

Driving home at 1am having started work at 9am is putting you in serious danger of death every time it happens. In a previous job I had to work these hours for just a week and my employers didn't hesitate to agree to pay for on-site accommodation so that I didn't have to risk my life in that way. Tired people are terrible drivers.
