Trial Shift Confusion

I applied for a job which I have a lot of experience for, the owner seemed really impressed and naturally asked for a trial shift which is normal in my line of work, normally to see if you like the place and to see if you would fit in with the others as you normally work extremely closely with one another.
I have done them before and asked people to do them for me as well so I know how they work. Normally you are asked to come in for 2hrs at most, I then got a message, (no phone calls its all done through text) asking me to work two full (9-4) shifts this week instead so thought they hadn't bothered with the trial at all (one I have done the other is later this week)
I start my shift and realise I haven't been asked for bank details or any proof that I can work in the UK legally. The owner then turns to say he thought I should have longer "trial" shifts to see how I like it as I am so experienced.
Am I being taken for a ride? Usual trial shifts are unpaid small 2 hr shifts to get a feel for the place not to slog it out all day doing their work for them. I will have worked 14 hrs this week possibly for no pay at all and maybe no job either.
Any thoughts?

That does sound a little off.

However i am not an expert - hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will come along and advise.

When people show you who they are believe them. You can go in and state your case but I’m not convinced it’ll get you far.
You know this has made you feel a bit confused and mislead, trust your instinct.

Thank you. I hoped it wasn't only me that thought it was off. I've run plenty of trial shifts in my time but never something like this. It doesn't help that its a lot quieter then I am used too.
There are a couple of health and environmental issues with the place I have noticed too.
I had to leave my old job due to the fact I was assaulted by a colleague will working (whole different story) so I haven't worked for 6 months which is lovely but I'm on universal credit and worry if I turn it down even though I feek uneasy I will get into trouble

14 hours?!

Jesus... it does sound a bit odd.

Even teaching interviews dont expect you to do that much. 1 lesson teaching kids with people watching you, interview, guide round the school. Bish bash bosh... done. Usually it is an all day thing but still that only runs from like 9am till 2/3pm. 6 hours at most?

I think you need to have a delicate word.

If you've already made your mind up, say so and request that you be paid for the hours they are asking you to work. You are experienced and skilled and should be paid for your contributions to their work effort.

That doesn't sound right at all. Companies are legally allowed to request trial shifts but certainly not for 14 hours and o would be concerned about their practices. Trial shifts in my line of work are two hours max at the busiest time to get a picture of you as an employee. We also provide vouchers for your time in lieu of payment.

@plinkplink thank you.
Its not even a particularly "skilled" profession it's a barista but I have fair few years experience and have completed my maestro (master of coffee so basically an in-store trainer) training and ran my previous store with ease.
I don't like that everything is done by text message either. I'm just confused and find it boring compared to my old place

Thank you didn't know if it was just me, they haven't said whether I have the job or not I have no idea, nothing has been discussed for next week and I was basically put to work waiting tables and not allowed to touch the coffee machine or help with the till or anything so I basically felt like a lacky whereas I am used to doing everything all at once paperwork, payroll ordering etc so I just ended up washing pots and wishing I was somewhere else.
