would this put you off?

I've been offered another job. I'm in IT, and it would be using more up to date software with the possibility of project management. My current job is OK but up to now hasn't had many prospects. It might improve if we get another client, but that's not certain - although it is a possibility. I'd like a more senior position but there's no chance of that for at least 2 more years. It is a safe job though! The offer letter for the new one stresses the 6 month probation, saying your employment is only confirmed when you'd had a satisfactory review at the end - otherwise you could get dismissed. I guess this is standard? I've not seen it put that way before. I'd be afraid of putting a foot wrong for the 1st 6 months! dh says it would put him off a bit - and the 3 month notice period. I still quite fancy the job but not sure it's a bit risky, given our outgoings...

Yes, it's standard. Take no notice. Nobody fails their probation.

Don't worry about the wording for probation.

You are on probation for a year anyway. Thats the time during which they can sack you if they feel like it and you won't be able to claim unfair dismissal. So you could be confirmed after 6 months then they decide you have too much time off or you don't fit in and they sack you anyway.

The only exceptions to the year are discrimination cases such as disability, race, sex, gender, religious belief, sexual orientation and a few other's I can't think of right now!

Absolutely normal I'm afraid.
And about the 3 month notice period, also fairly normal if it is a relatively senior post, but if you were to get another job or something happened and you really had to leave earlier, there's not a lot they could do to stop you (shh!) so don't worry unduly about that.

thanks for your replies. I've been in my current job for quite a while - taking a new one seems a bit scary! but I feel better about it now.
