Resignation question

TermTimeQuestion · 19/05/2019 08:17

I am about to hand in my resignation for a term time only job (not a teacher) that has an annualised salary. I am leaving in order to care for a family member with terminal cancer so not going to a new job at the moment.

Does anyone know if there are any pros or cons to setting my leaving date as the last day of the summer term (25th July) or the last day of the summer holiday (2nd Sept)?

I am only required to give 1 month notice so in that way it makes no odds but I am tempted to give the Sept date so I have a smaller gap on my CV when I look for work again.

Most summer holidays I do some admin work for work on a flexible basis and I am happy to do that again this summer, I am the only one who knows how to do some things so I don't want to leave them stuck.

Can you give more than a month’s notice so you can still leave in September but they have more time to find a replacement?

Yes, I intend to resign this week regardless of leaving date, it's just which date to put as my final day in the letter.

Do you have to resign at this point? Can you go on leave to look after your relative?

☕️ and 💐 for you.

To add to the complications we are moving to another part of the country in a year or so for dh's job so work know I am going to be resigning then so I don't want to mess them about going on leave, I need a clean break, as do they.

I think I want to give the Sept date for my CV but don't want to give work extra hassle (and probably want to tell myself I am doing them a favour too).

Okay, I was just a bit (and remain) slightly concerned that you're trying to do what's best for your workplace, rather than what's best for you. I do appreciate why though.

Good luck.

Thank you very much, a bit of outside perspective is really useful, I feel guilty resigning but I need to do it so if I do it in a way that is best for my workplace it reduces the guilt. I shall use September as it is best for me and they don't lose out in me doing so.
