Hey,
So a couple weeks ago I attended an interview and the next day I was informed I got the job and was given a start date, I left the job I had and unfortunately my 9 month old daughter had seizures and ended up in hospital over 3 days undergoing test which was over the date I was to start my new job. I informed them of the situation stating that I was unable to start on this day because of daughter in hospital the next day I even had a text from the employer asking how my little one was getting on that was the Friday so on the Tuesday (Monday being bank holiday) I contacted them to say I could start the following day to be told oh we have recruited someone else now sorry we will let you know if another vacancy comes up !!
Can they do this ?? I am now jobless with 3 children I am also a single parent. I don’t what to do. On one hand I am furious but then I don’t want to kick up a fuss Incase a vacancy does come up. Anyone with advice ?

Had you signed a contract or got a written job offer from them?

Mummaunicorn · 09/05/2019 17:10

No I just had the phone call after the interview and a start date.

Any email/letter as a formal job offer?

MummyParanoia101 · 09/05/2019 17:11

Oops cross post!

If they're a chain company I'd contact head office

Seems harsh for the sake of a couple of days but with no formal job offer or anything there's very little you can do.

I know you know this now but it was never a good idea to leave a job based on a phone call from a new one, always make sure you have an offer confirmed in writing beforehand.

Will your old job have you back?

Mummaunicorn · 09/05/2019 17:48

I believe my position has also been filled there 😫

Yes they can do this. Hope your dd is better, thats the main thing.

Always get the offer of contract through and signed before leaving a job

I think that you have nothing to lose by writing a polite email to the CEO or head of HR explaining what has happened and that you are now unemployed as a result.

It doesn’t put them in a very good light and they will know that you could get quite a bit of media traction if you chose to expose them - although of course you wouldn’t...

Unless an agency was involved, which would change things a bit?
