I think I need the wisdom of the crowd on this one! Will try to keep it short but include relevant info.
I'm early in my career - in my first professional role after university (before this job I did customer service in various forms). My current role is quite project management focused; it's not something I really actively chose, but for various reasons I kind of fell into it and took the opportunity to finally move away from customer service. I've been in this role for around 2 years and it's given me a lot of great experience and "soft skills" but it's not what I want to do long term.
I've just been invited to interview for an internal vacancy for a completely different role which seems to play better to my strengths than project management, although it's not completely aligned to my skills... More adjacent, if that makes sense! It's also more senior than my current role. I have no experience in this area but luckily the hiring manager made clear that they are looking for skills that they can build on, more than experience. I don't know if it's an area that I'd be passionate about, but I think it's definitely more my cup of tea than my current role.
So on the surface, the new job would be perfect and it's not often you get to interview stage without any experience. However, I'm getting cold feet for a few reasons:
-
the team I'd be interviewing for is newly created and very small. Both the new team and my current team are spread out across the UK, but I have a few colleagues currently near me at the office. In the new role, I don't think anyone from that team is based at the same location as me which could be quite isolating. Plus, my current team are really supportive and work well as a group and I value that a lot.
-
being in such a large team with overlapping skills/responsibilities at the moment, the management are great at arranging workloads so that nobody is overwhelmed and everyone gets a chance to develop bit by bit, as they're introduced to more complex projects. I don't think this will be the case on the new, smaller team.
-
the culture of my current team is brilliant. Heavy emphasis on work/life balance, teamwork, engagement, recognition, etc. Theoretically this should be the case throughout the whole company, but others have commented that our team is much better at these things than elsewhere internally.
All that being said, I have anxiety and I'm terrible at leaving my comfort zone. Am I talking myself out of a great opportunity, or should I stay where I am (where I love the people and the environment, but not the work itself) until something truly amazing comes along?
