Not working a round number of hours per week

I'm applying for flexible working for picking my little girl up from school when she starts in September. The school is really close by - if I finish at 3.00 I can't get there in time but finishing at 2.45 will mean waiting around for a while and invariably doing extra work every day (school finishes at 3.15). Can I ask to finish work at for example 2.55? Therefore my contracted hours would be 22 hours and 50 minutes per week. Can I do this? Is it strange to ask?

You can ask, it’s up to your employer whether they would say yes.

You can ask. Whether they allow it will depend on the needs of the business and also whether their payroll system can handle it.

I don’t work a round number of hours. I do 28 hours 30 mins. Work are fine with it but I appreciate that working out what half an hours pay is worth is easier than working out 50 minutes!

I'm salaried so it would be whatever proportion if my old salary...So not difficult to work out I'd think. Glad there's no reason I cant ask :)

Ours has to be in half hour increments, both the hours per day and the total.

I have a 15 minute walk to school but leave 30 mins before incase someone grabs me/rings just before I leave - sometimes I use the 10 minute buffer to pop to get bread from the shop opposite school or just walk a little bit slower- nice not having to rush.

Are you having a lunch break - could that be slightly longer to round up your hours?

It depends how your payroll is calculated I guess. That would be the most significant limit for my company. We can work in 15 min increments but no less than that otherwise the payroll system doesn't register it. As others have said probably working until 2:45 then using the extra time to not have to rush is best. Or officially finishing at 2:45 but knowing you have until 2:55 to actually leave. In my experience someone generally catches me for "a quick chat" just as I'm leaving to pick my kids up! That extra 15 mins means you're not going to be late!
