Aldi....have you or do you work there?

I've been offered the chance to go for an assessment at our local Aldi.

I've never worked in a supermarket nearest I've done is a salon for a lot of years.

I work with challenging behaviour now and am not getting any younger so think I need a change.

Dh thinks I'd be mad to work for a supermarket as he thinks I'll hate it. I'd only be part time.

What are they like to work for?

My days will be shorter and I won't have to work night shift.

That's if I got the job as there'll be loads going for it.

I'm an Aldi deputy manager and genuinely love the job, I can try answer any questions you have?

gamerchick · 25/04/2019 21:28

Apparently they're awesome employers OP. They treat their staff really well by all accounts.

CuriousMama · 25/04/2019 22:24

Thank you both for answering.

The main thing was just what they're like to work for?

I'm a bit worried about rushing people through the tills. I'm used to going to Morrisons where they chat to customers.

You'll be happy to hear that there isn't any till speed rates recorded anymore, it's changed very recently in a drive to be customer service focused. We are now told to scan at an appropriate speed for the customer (we still need to be quicker than other supermarkets to get everything done), we can't chat for long but we all chat while serving :)

The starting pay is £9.10 and there are 2 payrises a year for the first 3 years and this year we got bonuses too. We get paid breaks with an option to have extra breaks unpaid if you request them (must be done in advance not on the day of shift).

There aren't many staff on shift so all staff will do all tasks needed to run the store and tasks do need to be done in good time but we all know that a pallet of stock isn't going to be done too quick if we're off/on tills, we are reasonable but there are achievable ideal speeds for working stock. Usually at my store there are always extra hours of overtime up for grabs if wanted (I'm on 35hr contract but usually work 44-48).
Bank Holidays are double time and we shut early Xmas eve and we close on Xmas day, boxing day, new years day & Easter Sunday. We usually work it so those with family have the days around Xmas off and the younger ones prefer new years off. Days off or time off for appointments are easy worked out too, same for school events like Christmas plays, assemblies etc I work around those.

There is always upto date training and management catch ups to make sure staff are happy and it gives a chance for any issues that crop up to be dealt with ASAP. If you wanted to progress up to management then it's encouraged too, I started P/T on 25hrs as store assistant and after 18mths I'm a deputy Store manager on an increased 35 hr contract.

Everyone is extremely helpful and we have a fantastic laugh, I do enjoy working for aldi and always recommend it. The shifts can be long and hard going but the laugh and friendships we all have make it not seem so hard.

Good luck (sorry for the long rambling post, I think I got carried away!)

I forgot to say that in my store everyone bar 2 people in the last 2.5yrs have stayed so we can't be too scary :D

CuriousMama · 25/04/2019 23:34

That's so helpful. To be honest I think time flies when you're busy. I hate sitting around.

It's really kind of you to take the time to post. Just have to see if they offer me a job 😊

You're very right about time going quick, it really does!

Good luck, I hope you get the job! Let us know how you get on :)

(if you're invited for Store experience, you've pretty much got the job. They only invite those who they they'd want to employ)

I am a former Aldi employee I loved my time working for them. It's hard work and long, late hours but they look after you and I always felt very valued. The money is good and they are very good at communicating any company issues with staff so you don't look like a melon when a customer asks why they haven't been able to get a product for the last three weeks. I found the training was the best training I've ever received. It's incredibly thorough and they give you tests to sign you off. Some of the tips and techniques I learnt I was able to carry forward into my next job.
What many people don't realise is that you are expected to do the lot so you will be unpacking stock and running to the tills inbetween. It was never dull that's for sure!

Thank you both of you.

How long are the shifts on average?

OP posts:
TheHobbitMum · 27/04/2019 07:54

In our store it really does vary for shift length, some only work 4/5hrs a day but I'd say the average is 8-10hrs long. During Christmas then it's 10-12hrs but the rota does work around staffs family/commitments :)

CuriousMama · 27/04/2019 19:07

Thank you again TheHobbitMum

I love Aldi as a customer, and enjoy speaking to staff - it is nice to hear that the job is not too bad as well..
