Job share and annual leave

A question for those of you who job share.
How is annual leave covered? Can you take annual leave at the same time?
Are you expected to cover your job share's hours when he/she is on annual leave?
If you do have to cover do you get paid for the extra hours?
Many thanks

A friend of mine job shares, and two of my colleagues do too. Leave wise they are treated as one person, so they are never expected to cover for each other. They can take leave at the same time, but wouldn’t actually be as they work set days. So if my friend takes her 2 days off a week, her jobshare can take their 3 days off. The colleagues I have who jobshare do a PA job, so someone is needed to cover when they’re off but they don’t cover for each other.

My DM is one half of a job share. They have to cover each others leave. Always seems bizarre to me as they effectively end up with no leave.

@HunterHearstHelmsley
Does your DM get paid for covering the other half's leave?
How do they effectively end up with no leave?
Many thanks

I was in a job share that sounds similar to the situation Hunter is describing. I worked Mon-Wed (9-5) and the other person worked Thurs-Fri (9-5) and Saturday (9-12). If I wanted a day off, I was always told by my boss “Ask xxxx if she can cover your Monday (for example) and you do one of her days.” So effectively we both just ended up working different days in that week, but I’d still end up having a days leave deducted. We could, of course have said no it’s not convenient but as there were only two of us, we tried to help each other out. I was applying for other FT jobs at the time and so would rather have swapped than be refused leave if there was no cover and I had an interview (it was Sod’s law that they were all on my working days). It did take a while to dawn on me....however, I was only there a couple of months so I wasn’t that bothered.

Book leave and take it as normal for a part-timer, but it’s easier if we are both off. Trying to do a six day a week job in three days is hard going. We never cover for each other - our childcare doesn’t cover our usual non working days, so we can’t.

@ElinoristhenewEnid yeah she gets paid.

I say 'effectively' as say she gets 20 days leave, so does her job share. They both cover each others 20 days. They have to cover leave but can say no to extras, they can also not cover specific weeks if they have already said they are not available.

@MissCharleyP Did you get paid for the day you swapped to? If you did not you were not getting any paid leave.

Reason I am asking is that a friend was told if she did a job share, the 2 salaries were for the 'whole' job so if her job share partner was off she would have to cover her hours but would not get paid extra for it because the cover was included in the salary. To me this seemed like no paid annual leave was given because the hours put in to cover the job share partner in effect offset the annual hours they took for themselves
