Explaining sideways move

I've been in my current job for 3 years. A year ago my line manager resigned and was replaced by someone I've struggled to get along with. As a result, I've become quite unhappy and am applying for other jobs.

I've got an interview for a similar role to my own, in another organisation. The salary is slightly more but other than that, it's very obvious from my CV that the move will be a sideways one and not a progression.

I'm bound to be asked the question at interview 'why do you want to leave your current job?'

I'm not sure of the best way to respond.. any advice, please?

  • You can see more opportunities for progression in the new organisation
  • You are impressed with the new organisation's reputation for [insert something relevant] and want to work for them.

If possible, zone in on any differences between the two roles/organisations and explain why these would be a better fit with your competencies and aspirations.

Don’t tell them why you want to leave the old job, tell them why you want the new one

Loads of good reasons - development, opportunity to see more of the business and add value etc
