Notice period advice please

I work a min wage job and the notice period is 2 months. I am looking to move to another min wage job much nearer home and I highly doubt (they won't) wait two months. I don't understand why it's such a long notice period.

I can see why it would be 2 months for lecturing staff as it's a college but a kitchen assistant? I've been there 3 months, probation period is 9 months. Do you think if I offer 2 weeks it's acceptable? The place is currently so quiet we're spending the days looking for things to do, won't hot up again until September so plenty of time to recruit.

Two months even during probation? That’s very usual are you absolutely sure?

If you're quiet they might be happy to let you go early. If they are not, you could do it anyway and they could in theory sue you, but they would need to show it was impossible to hire anyone to replace you and they made business losses as a result. This sounds very unlikely with a min wage job.

unusual not usual, obviously.

I think during probation it's normally a lot shorter? Like a week or two. Imagine if they wanted to get rid of you because you weren't performing, they wouldn't want you still in the job and paying your wage for two months.

100% certain. I find it mad for a min wage job. It says if they're not happy with me they'd give me one month's written notice. I do know that someone has left having only given one week's notice and it was find so I'm just going to give two weeks. I know they'll be able to get someone quick and I also know they'll manage just fine without me seeing as we're all so deathly quiet. Thanks.
