Saturday working

(Sorry if this isn't in the right place)

I'm a full time university student, worked for 3 years after college before deciding to go.
I got a job back in October and the job was advertised as 1 day per week, I have a day off each week from uni so thought this would be perfect, I contacted them and explained I had 1 day off a week and could fit the shift in then which they said was fine. During the interview the manager told me it would be a split shift over 2 days and asked if I could work Saturdays. I told her I do have commitments on Saturdays (uni work, volunteering etc) and I may be able to do the odd Saturday here and there.
Since January, I've been rota'd in to do every other Saturday as well as a day in the week and the hours are difficult (12-4) so it's bang in the middle of the day. I've tried to do as many as I can but it's becoming hard.

I am thinking of emailing my area manager explaining the difficulty I'm having of working Saturdays and seeing if I can do just 1 day during the week or possibly 1 Saturday a month. In my contract it simply states 7.5 hours and HR is not aware of me doing split shifts.

Do I have anything on my side if I do email her? Or could she simply just sack me?

Any advice would be great! Thank you

Well, you can ask......

The problem is that if you aren't working those shifts, someone else will have to. I'm guessing it's a lunchtime cover shift, which means that staff who are normally at work won't be able to cover as they will be on lunch.

Could you speak with some of your colleagues and see if you could swap with them? That way, you are presenting a solution rather than a problem.

No it’s not a cover shift, there’s only 2 of us who work in the department so it’s simply just having me there to cover 2 days even if it’s just for a few hours. I left a note over the weekend with some dates I couldn’t do and have now had a reply to say a meeting will take place with the area manager to discuss my request. Not really sure what that means but I guess I will soon find out
