Would you pay for this?

I do art commission work but I’m getting no where. I currently charge 120 pounds for a full colour portrait of humans or pets which is cheep. But I was thinking of branching out and changing to more kids sort of things maybe ultrasounds and things for kids nursery’s. And more line drawing portraits of kids. How much would you pay for these?

@GregoryPeckingDuck I’m not very good at being buisness minded, I was meant to design clothes for my friends clothing company but she couldn’t be bothered. I honestly just don’t know what to do I can work so hard but Um not very good at Seo and with creating art and being a single mum I find I’m rather time poor.

I may be over estimating my talents Grin

But digital art just sounds like a cop out to me - I'd have thought the skill was in the hand painting.

I love the fox and the blue bird. I'd buy really big original hand painted versions of these, or prints, but I'm not keen on your other stuff.

Your work is lovely! Do you use social media? Have you thought of a collaboration? Ask an instagramer to promote in exchange for a free piece? Maybe choose someone that's pregnant and do a baby ultrasound or maternity piece of art? I've seen lots of similar businesses on insta, seem to do well and are always sharing work.

The one of your DD and cat is so sweet. If I had spare cash I'd pay up to £100 for one of my DD, sorry not sure if that's the kind of figure you expect - I don't know anything about how much artwork should cost! I'd probably pay more if I could.

I agree the origami ones are nice, and they strike me as original.

None of the others appeal at all to be honest, and digital art doesn't as a concept - I totally get that I don't appreciate the skill, but it all just looks to me as something anyone who learnt a particular package could do.

I do have a Instagram page 😊 but I hadn’t thought of doing a callob with someone who is more active? I’m just worried about getting burned again. Probably worth contacting some mummy bloggers etc and see if they would consider my art work. Thank you @practicallyperfectmummy

@slimgin I only charge 35-80 for ones like that so even the offer makes me feel so good 😊

With all this dislike of digital art maybe I should be mixed media and not mention the d word 😜

@Heratnumber7 I think I’ll try and list them somewhere and sell original and prints thank you

When I was talking to some artists showing stuff locally a few months ago, more than one were marketing stuff derived from prints of their originals. Stuff like cushions, mugs etc that are quite easy to arrange via online printing companies nowadays. I would think that some of your work would sell like that too - why don't you have a look at what can be produced and think about which things might work with your designs. Ideally you'd sell online, with only a couple of samples and pictures of your originals, then when someone orders a "blanket with picture X" you put the order through the printing company.

Good luck.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 03/04/2019 19:54

So starting a business is in and of itself a skill. Have you tried reading up on this stuff?

Nameisthegame · 03/04/2019 20:00

@Pythonesque sadly I don’t speak the language very well but maybe I can contact someone who has a stall and pay a commission? I do have a few print on demand accounts that I’m not currently using.

We do some stuff like pythonesque has mentioned i.e. make a design once and it gets printed on various items to bring in a small recurring turnover, but we mostly do commissions and personalised mixed media work for clients homes which is where we seem to do best, they are unique and original. It's just finding your little niche really. You do have to keep at it though and yes to pp who said about researching the business side

practicallyperfectmummy · 03/04/2019 22:00

What's your insta I will follow. Their are some good blogger fb groups, join one of those and ask who is interested in a collaboration. Ask them to leave social media links and offer an exchange for a piece setting out what you would expect back from them. I've seen this done lots and seems to mutually work. Good luck

Nameisthegame · 03/04/2019 22:36

Thanks for all the good advice, I’ll make some time to create a plan of action 😊 @practillyperfectmummy I’ll message you my Instagram link ❤️❤️
