How to ask for a salary increase based on role and not me?

Hello,

I'm looking for advice. My employer doesn't give salary increases based on the individual nor do they conduct independent salary reviews or increases.

I have been working on projects out with my job description due to management not picking up on a lot of things and therefore, I find myself doing almost similar work to management without the pay packet.

I have been welcomed to formally ask for my role profile to be reviewed with a view to a salary increase. But bearing in mind that this request isn't based on me, what's the best and most effective way to go about this and can you point me in the direction of templates or advice?

I'd simply do a chart with two columns.

Column A - list of responsibilities of old role
Column B - list of responsibilities of new role, including duration of these tasks (is it a temporary sticking plaster or will you be doing them forever?) And any increased budgetary, revenue or people management linked to each new task area.

If you are indeed consistently performing at a level beyond your role - because the business needs you to rather than because you choose to - then it should be clear from the list that you have levelled up and there is a case to consider paying you for the increased value your role is bringing to the company

(in not an HR or finance person, but I am a senior manager and I have successfully negotiated payrises a few times, and also had team members ask me for a payrises and seen how not to do it!)

In my company it’s called “regrading” after they did away with “promotion”. The idea is to demonstrate that the work you are doing requires a larger degree of independent working, with clients of a higher grade, or projects with an increased complexity.

If you wrote a job add for your role what would it say? The key argument is “the job is worth this” not “I am worth this”. Just being better at what you used to do is not enough.

It sounds like you have a good case!

Asking you to do your own job evaluation there, OP!

Think about the skills required to perform the higher level tasks, the contacts you use and any additional technology. Thinking of projects, is there a large budget involved, deadlines to set/adhere to, planning, co-ordination between different groups/users/stakeholders. Updating all the users, being a focus for queries (and solving them!) and delivering the results needed!
