New job and TTC

Not sure if this is the right place so sorry if it’s not.

I want to start TTC after I speak to my doctor at the end of April and I’m realistic that it could take some time to become pregnant if at all. I have just started a new job and DH reckons I should wait until I’ve been here 6 months before starting to TTC.

What do you guys think? And if I did get pregnant after only having been in the new job less than 2 months would that make me ineligible for maternity pay and affect any probation period?

It could make you ineligible for enhanced mat pay, presuming they offer it

It could impacted wether you get SMP, you would need to look the qualifying periods for both.

Its discrimination for pregnancy to impact your probabtion. That doesnt mean it doesnt happen.

In my experience while an employer may not sack you, they dont always look favourably on employees who join and then get pregnant straight away. You also do hear of cases where women in your position have lost their jobs for poor performance and it's very difficult to prove it was actually discrimination.

It all depends on the company and management. It's not fair but it happens.

Personally, I would wait. But that's me. Doesnt mean it's right for you.

If you like the job and it would be chancy to find another one, I'd agree with your DH. Regardless of the legalities, getting pregnant shortly after starting a new job then going off on mat leave is going to create some hard feelings.

What’s not fair is letting an employer go through all the time and expense of a recruitment process and taking up their offer of employment while knowing that if all goes to plan, you’ll only be there for a few months before taking maternity leave.

As long as you aren’t pregnant before starting a job, and you’re still there at week 25 and earning enough to qualify, you’d be eligible for SMP as a minimum.
