Bad situation at work. I am so unlucky with jobs

I'm a beauty therapist and I work for a big organisation. I've only been there 4 months and I fitted in really well and have even won some awards etc.

Anyway. In the last week it has become clear to me that this business is going down the pan. The following signs are evident;

  • No products. They have not paid our skin care supplier. They are still booking us in to do facials that we can't physically do

  • They haven't paid their phone bill and the phone line has been cut off

  • there are no cleaning products, the pool isn't being cleaned and the laundry is being washed with only water

  • suddenly staff perks have been cut

  • there was a sudden decision last month to rebrand everything

I am really annoyed. How long before people get ill? I cannot do treatments because we have no products. I just don't want to be there because I can't provide the service I'm trained to do.

What would you do in my position?

Oh and the manager lied to the head therapist and told her they had paid the bill when they hadn't.

Start looking for something else sharpish. You don’t want to be left in the lurch if they suddenly shut down and you’re made redundant.

Look to move asap.

I'm already looking for other jobs and have interviews lined up. But I'm finding it hard to actually be at this job when I can't do it.

How likely would you say it is that it will close?

How likely would you say it is that it will close? - well if no-one can phone to make an appointment and they can't provide half the treatments anyway, I'd say pretty well guaranteed!

ReallyReallyNo · 25/03/2019 21:54

If they can’t offer treatments they can’t be making any revenue, no revenue means no stock, no bills paid including wages unfortunately. The only thing you can do is turn up ready to work and hope for the best until you get a new job.

Have you called them out and asked?

Check your contract to see what your notice period is. If you don't have a written document, assume you can give a week or two's notice at most.

If they are unable to pay their suppliers or even their phone bill, they are hardly going to pay you, are they. On that basis, every day from now on that you turn up for work, the risk is you're giving your services for free.

Your choice but if it were me, I'd sooner bale out quick and do bar or retail work where the company is viable and can pay my wages. 80% of something is better than 100% of nothing!

Then you can look for a new beauty therapy job while you know your bills are being paid.

My notice period is one month. They ARE making revenue. They just expect us to do substandard treatments with whatever is there. They also get money from people's memberships.

'On that basis, every day from now on that you turn up for work, the risk is you're giving your services for free'

Yes, exactly. This is what makes me mad. And I rely on this job to pay our rent.

To give you an idea. We have 16 treatment rooms. And we all have about 8 clients each a day. A massage costs £70. So they are making a lot of money.
