DS has his sights on qualifying as a solicitor and working in the city.

If you work/worked in the city as a lawyer, how had is it really?

Long hours which is fine if you have a supportive partner. I did it for a while, moved to a regional for a while, then back in because I missed it, then another stint out. But it only works if your partner is supportive. My ex wasn't and becane jealous of my life even though it was work or networking events.

The hours are long, and competition to get in, make it through the training contract and have a role at is pretty fierce at the moment.

The first couple of years as a trainee can be fantastic and also pretty soul destroying, simply depending on what team you are in. I'm going back 15 years, but all-nighters and getting home in the early hours of the morning and then being back at your desk at 9.30am are hard going. On the other hand, financially it can be hugely rewarding, especially longer term.

You have to be prepared to make sacrifices though and I don't think either my husband or I would have got to where we are if we'd had family commitments in those early years.
