Would you take notice of terrible reviews on glassdoor?

Company that has made me an offer have consistently bad reviews on glassdoor for the position I've been offered
I'm not enjoying my current job but I really don't want to go somewhere worse
The reviews are pretty consistent over the last few years all over the UK, all saying similar things

WWYD?

I think you need to take it with a grain of salt as people are more likely to go out of their way to post complaints than anything complimentary.

However I did heed comments on glass door when I recently turned down a role.

I think it gives you a flavour of the culture.,,

windygallows · 17/03/2019 20:17

What are the comments like?

Lilao · 17/03/2019 20:18

I think if several people are saying the same thing it would make me wonder. It depends on the size of the organisation/ number of people in that role as well.

5/5 saying it's awful may carry some weight - 5/1000 perhaps not so much?

BIWI · 17/03/2019 20:22

I suppose it depends what kind of thing they're saying - can you give us some examples?

I'd be worried if they're consistent and also all over the country.

BIWI · 17/03/2019 20:23

It might also be something to take up with their HR people, if you feel you could?

ssd · 17/03/2019 20:23

They were mostly all saying the same thing with regards hours worked and paid and the way you are treated by management

My current employer and last employer get great reviews on Glass door, including from leavers. The reviews are accurate in both cases.

I'd take care with consistent bad reviews.

Boodlesnuts · 17/03/2019 20:27

I worked for a terrible company. Didn't check the glass door reviews before I started. I'd been made redundant and was so pleased to get an offer for the first job I applied for.

Now, I've moved on I look back at the Glass Door reviews out of curiosity. 75% are horrendous (and totally accurate) the other 25% are glowing (totally implausible, and written by the HR staff by all accounts).

Chewbecca · 17/03/2019 20:27

It depends a bit on the size of the organisation too. I work for a huge place and don’t recognise many comments on there. Policy comments are accurate but not ones which are individual team / manager dependent.

ssd · 17/03/2019 20:36

A lot of the reviews say the people you work with are nice but the management want blood out of a stone with regards your hours and what's expected of you
I don't mind putting in a bit extra to my working day but I don't want to work at least an hour extra everyday without a guaranteed lunch break, for little more than minimum wage

Hmm. It doesn't sound good, does it?

I would be worried about that to be honest.

Jellyfloodagain · 17/03/2019 20:47

What company is it?

ssd · 17/03/2019 20:48

Don't really want to say but it's a charity shop

The company I work for has had a spate of dreadful reviews on glassdoor. It's going through a period of great change and people are really struggling. But the comments are accurate...

Petalflowers · 17/03/2019 20:53

I would try to read between the lines. If it’s a big company, then one office may be fine, but another office awful. Also, do the comments relate to what you are doing? How recent are the reviews, and how often? One review a year isn’t too bad. Lots of recent reviews, not so good.

ssd · 17/03/2019 20:57

The comments relate to my position and all say very similar no matter where they work or when

If there was more of a mix I'd be more positive but its almost consistent

Disfordarkchocolate · 17/03/2019 21:01

Can you take it and keep looking for another job?

WrongKindOfFace · 17/03/2019 21:01

There will always be a mixture, but consistently bad reviews would concern me. Can you bear your currently job until something better comes along?

hen10 · 17/03/2019 21:04

Personally, I'd steer clear if you could afford to. The reviews for the company I work for are pretty accurate IME. I should have thought to look first. You've got to be quite motivated to bother posting on it, most averagely disgruntled types won't bother so either all the posters have a random grudge, or there's maybe some truth in the reviews...

EssentialHummus · 17/03/2019 21:14

The reviews are pretty consistent over the last few years all over the UK, all saying similar things

This suggests they are true, ime (I had similar with a large company I worked for).

ssd · 17/03/2019 21:48

I'll stick with what I have for now and keep looking for a new job.
