When does a job become permanent?

I've been in a temporary role since Easter 2018. When does a temporary role become permanent. Some sources have said after 6 months but others have said it could be up to two years.

Not sure which to believe.

If they end the job after 2 years there is redundancy, nothing prior to that. Sorry that's all I know!

You can stay on a fixed term (temporary) contract indefinitely, but you get employments rights as a permenant employee after 2 years.

Sorry to drip feed. I should add my main role is a permanent contract. The temporary role is an extra layer of responsibility within the organisation. More of a management role.

So an acting up payment? I don't believe there's any obligation to make that permenant, although it would count in your salary for any redundancy calculation.

If the acting up role is temporary, the company might advertise it either in-house or externally. It won't become yours unless and until they offer it to you.

Thanks to all for the advice given. It's really useful.

If it is offered on a permanent basis, would another interview where all internal staff are offered the role again be protocol or could it be offered to me bypassing the interview process?

Someone becomes permanent if they are on a succession of temporary contracts for four years continuously.

What you’re asking about it whether a temporary enhancement of responsibility ever becomes permanent by default. The answer is it depends on circumstances. Has your employer not given any indication of for how long this will be?

Whether they have to advertise the extra responsibility or can give it to you on a permanent basis depends on their internal policies.

There no law requiring them to advertise the role if they decide to appoint permenantly but it would be best practice to do so, so that they can be sure they appointed the best candidate and so that your colleagues see a transparent and fair process.

There's no such thing as a truly permanent job. Very easy for a permanent role to be made redundant should it no longer be required.

You’re usually deemed to be permanent in law if you have worked under continuous successive fixed term contracts for over four years (unless the employer can justify using renewal contracts).

However you have full employment rights after two years so the four year mark doesn’t mean a huge amount!
