Boss taking a sabbatical

Hi everyone!

I'm an EA to a Professor at a University. Permanent contract/post.

Just had it confirmed that from April he will be taking a sabbatical for 12 months, and my role won't be required. I've been told I can be redeployed within the Department, but I really don't want to do that.

I've asked for my employment T&Cs (of course I can't find my copy), but I'm worrying now I'm going to be out of a job. Can they offer me redundancy? Can I turn down a position they offer me if I don't want it?

Really not the news I was expecting..!

are you in a union or could you contact ACAS for advice, seems pretty unfair but if he is not there for a year then why not get redeployed in the same department if you enjoy working there.

You can't turn down an offer that is reasonable. So if they offer you an equivalent role and you turn it down you will be resigning, not redundant.

Thanks both.

He has a small research group here so a proportion of my hours may be retained, I don't know of any other vacancies at the moment, but am meeting with HR next week to discuss.

@Bombardier yes, that's what I thought.. Hopefully they can find me someone nice to work for!

Your role will be redundant, but if they redeploy you to something suitable for your skills and on the same pay etc, you won’t be entitled to redundancy pay if you decide not to take that offer up.
