Where to find IR35 advice?

I have read up on IR35, and have attended an online seminar but I want to know for sure if I/the company I contract for are liable to fall foul of IR35 as I am still not sure. Do I need to see an accountant or an employment laywer? Or someone else?!

You need a contract/working practices review. There are a few respected/specialist firms who do them - such as QDOS, Bouer & Cottrell, and Accountax. These kinds of firm do it day in day out and are also active with Court cases/challenges, so will know how HMRC approach challenges etc. You send them your contract and you complete a working practices questionnaire. They evaluate and give you their formal opinion as to whether you're likely to be caught or not. Fee is around £100-£150.

You will find loads of "contractor accountants" offering contract reviews, but it's a lottery as to whether they really know what they're doing, and they'll probably charge around the same anyway.

I am an accountant with my own practice, and I do specialise in contractor clients, and even though I know plenty about IR35, I still recommend clients to use one of the above firms (or similar specialists) for certainty/confidence and, like I say, because I'd be charging them that kind of money if I did the review myself, so it costs them little or nothing more to use a firm that really knows what they're doing.
