Just like my username , I have used site for years and held back from contributing . But I really need some advice.
I have one job offer and one potential offer second interview due . One is permanent , the other is temporary but the role I was waiting for could get my foot in the day if given the chance I'm sure
Which should I go for ?

Impossible to give you meaningful advice based on the information you've given.

Can you outline the key points of each role re salary levels, benefits, career advancement potential, commute etc?

Reccy2018 · 14/12/2018 08:16

Whether the permanent job is likely to be subject to any restructuring in the next few years, would also be handy info if you have it.

Stuckforlong · 14/12/2018 20:44

Sorry for the late reply , still getting a hang of this .

I'm going to be careful in case one of the employers uses this site , but here goes.

First job I've been offered , it's a bigger salary than what I'm getting isn't far to travel less than thirty minutes so more time for my daughter and team seem lovely .

Second job I'm due for interview next week less pay than first offer job but more money than my current job , hope this makes sense. Big organisation and could see careers prospects if I work hard . Only issues are it's a temporary contract so would be hoping they'd keep me on ( know this is common , could move departments etc )
And it's my dream role but I'd have over an hour commute

Current job they've changed over the years and it seems they've become it's not what you know but who you know

If you've got to make a decision because they've made you a job offer on Job1, then I'd accept but still go along for Job 2 interview.

Stuckforlong · 14/12/2018 22:58

Thanks Daisychain01 They've given me until Wednesday ( Job 1) so will attend interview for Job 2 and see what happens .

Am I ok as long as I don't sign a contract ? Or do they class a verbal agreement as legally binding .

I've been looking for months and had almost given up looking .

I haven't been treated well for a while in my current job and it's not just me . But I still feel a tad guilty , as this year alone they've had people leave . It's been a case of the directors bringing in their family members and friends ,rather than promote or train existing staff , staff morale seems low. I can count the amount of times I receive a thanks ( pretty low number ). I also feel like I've had to beg to have time off for anything school related ( shows, parents evenings, )

You can give notice on a contract so if you sign it and then change your mind, you can still resign from the role, even if you've only worked there a couple of days. Bear in mind though that this is likely to annoy then as they'll have wasted time and money recruiting you. If you do agree/ sign, and then change your mind, the earlier the better for them as they could offer role to person who came 2nd. Either way though, it's not your problem if they need to recruit again as you've accepted your dream job afterwords.

My big question to new job is why is it temporary. If a maternity cover, then imagine unlikely to be extended. If funding dependent, can they tell you anything about the likelihood of extension.

If it's temporary just to see how you get on then it's an extended probationary period in effect and I'm always dubious of these, as it's not the way temporary contracts should be used.

Stuckforlong · 15/12/2018 12:48

Thanks Reccy2018,

Yes I will accept first role if I can change my mind later . I would of course feel terribly but I want to make the right decision as a single parent

The second job temporary role , they didn't specify if it was maternity cover but they have two other roles advertised as temporary ending June 2019.

I don't know if this makes any difference but the company I work for is in the private sector , the job I've been offered is also private sector and the one I'll be interviewing for this week/next (after weekend) is public sector so I'd get sick pay , paid bank holidays etc .

I'd hate letting anyone down and I hope I can make the right decision although it's not certain I'll be offered the second job but I've passed first stage and this is second stage interview if that makes sense

I would accept the permanent offer and wait for your dream job to become permanent rather than hope it is

GemmeFatale · 15/12/2018 12:59

I’d take the job on offer. Dream jobs rarely live up to the dream, but a secure job with more money and a short commute is gold.

Reccy2018 · 15/12/2018 13:07

Really don't worry about letting them down. It's annoying but part of the course! I'd wait until after any future job offer to question the temporary role too, not at the interview. Best of luck!

User1011 · 15/12/2018 13:18

Definitely go to the second interview, I’ve been to companies and it’s only on the second interview where I’ve decided I want the job.

Even if you decide you don’t want it, it’s worth going as you learn so much in interviews.

Stuckforlong · 15/12/2018 16:54

Thanks GemmeFatale I think you have a point there it may not be the dream

Reecy2018 I think that's best all around accept the first job , but still attend interview for the second and wait to ask why it's temporary though I'm hoping they explain on the day

I suppose with second interviews that's when you decide if it's really the right fit all round you're right User1011 . I've also found it can be a personality thing

Also as a previous poster stated the dreaded "exit interview " my company has this in place and a "exit form" is it worth being completely honest when I hand in my notice or keeping things brief ?

OP posts:
GaryBaldbiscuit · 15/12/2018 17:21

Keep it brief, it might come back to haunt you

daisychain01 · 16/12/2018 06:51

You do not legally have to take part in an exit interview. HR like them so they can gather information to help with staff retention. I personally think if a company cares that much about my employment they would have asked my opinion during my employment not when I'm walking out the door.

Don't feel bad about changing your mind if Job 2 turns out to be a better option. Look after yourself first and foremost.

Stuckforlong · 19/12/2018 16:46

Thanks GaryBaldbiscuit I've kept it brief . They are trying to convince me to stay but I've politely declined to even asking me to think it over .
They want to discuss further in the new year

daisychain01. Thanks , that's exactly how I feel too little too late .

OP posts:
Stuckforlong · 19/12/2018 16:49

I just wanna say thanks again to everyone , you've all been helpful

I did attend that interview , I can honestly say it wasn't the dream I had in mind . I'm really glad I went though. So it looks like Job 1 is the way to go , I still have to work my notice etc
