I went for an interview last week and they rang me the day after to offer me a job. I'm excited , it's my dream job and a good increase in pay. They interviewed one other person yesterday . Thee were a few positions available. I'm just a little jittery as I've had nothing confirmed in writing yet, no email or anything. Am I just being impatient, how long does it normally take employers to send through paperwork, dbs check, formal job offer etc? I was so shocked at being offered the job I forget to ask regarding the next steps !

It can take ages. I work for the NHS and it takes an age to get references, health clearance, DBS, letter out etc. Don't worry yet. Ask your referees to respond quickly and don't hand in your notice until you have a formal written offer AFTER references.

Thanks show - I think it's just my anxiety working overtime thinking it's too good to be true and wanting something in writing !

Personally I would follow up with them and ask them to confirm when you will get your written offer letter (assuming that's normal in your industry).

I had a verbal offer for a job (that I verbally accepted) and they said they'd sent me the offer in writing. I went on holiday but kept an eye on my email and nothing came through. I rang them as soon as I landed back in the U.K. and the job had disappeared because they'd been told it had to go to a (cheaper) internal candidate instead.

I've known of a few verbal offers that evaporate due to a change in company budgets etc. So always make sure you get it in writing as well before you get too excited.

Don't hand in your notice at your current job, until you have a firm offer in writing with agreed start date.

Only then can you resign and serve notice with your current job, if you want to be certain it's a bona fide job offer.
