HMRC pre employment checks

My OH is currently going through pre employment checks with HMRC. He has a historic conviction for assault and we are wondering if anyone knows how HMRC will view this?
It's been 7 weeks since the checks started and there seems to be no way to contact anyone in recruitment to ask this question.
Does anyone have any ideas as it's so close to Christmas and we really want to know!!

This gives you the summary legislation:

For most jobs (and insurance) you don’t need to disclose your criminal record once it’s ‘spent’. This is because of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Most convictions will become spent at some point. We have a tool that can help work this out (disclosurecalculator.org.uk) or visit hub.unlock.org.uk/roa for guidance. Some jobs involve standard or enhanced DBS checks. For these, you’ll normally need to disclose spent convictions and cautions as well, unless they are now filtered by the DBS

Your OH can check his situation using the tool above.

I presume you have contacted the recruitment contact on the advert? You state you have waited 7 weeks already - Civil Service checks are often extremely slow and then you need to dance to their tune immediately. Although it was nearly 20 years ago the whole process for me took nearly 6 months before I was in post.

Thank you daisychain01 - I will have a look on the calculator.
Arnoldbee there is an email address which we have sent a couple of emails to enquiring but have had no reply. I have heard that the process can take a ridiculous amount of time... very frustrating
