Sorry I know a bit nosey , what hours are you working and what is your take home pay.

Thinking of moving out of preschool work into teaching assitant should the opportuniy arise.

Thank you .

Why don't you make this enquiry to your local authority who hire and pay teaching assistants? Then you will get the information you want, from the horse's mouth, and it will be a legitimate, not nosy enquiry. Or look for ads in your local paper (there's always one or two for a classroom assistant) and ring up to ask. Not nosy at all. Or noisy even.

As this site says there is ,as yet, no nationally agreed scale for TA's, but it will probably be somewhere around levels 8-11 or so ofthis scale
uk/eduweb/uploadedFiles/TeachingAssistantsPayScaleApril06.pdf this is fairly average.

AttilaTheMum · 22/06/2007 22:46

Sorry:
this is fairly average.
(Can't make that link work properly - click on the link at the top of the page for the pdf version.)

AttilaTheMum · 22/06/2007 22:49

Most of the TA's at our school work around 20 -25 hours a week, though we have a couple who only do about 12.
I'm not strictly speaking a TA, I'm an ICT support manager, & I work full time (37 hours) & take home about £1000 a month.

wheresthehamster · 22/06/2007 22:54

These are confusing though (unless I am SERIOUSLY underpaid!!) because it specifies a salary based on working all year whereas you are only paid for 39 weeks.

You need to find out the hourly rate to get the true amount.

MrsWho · 22/06/2007 23:06

I get paid 52 weeks.

My pay works out about £50 a day (5 1/2 h)I am a STA/SN so get a bit extra for that.

AttilaTheMum · 22/06/2007 23:06

If you can get the last link to work, it shows the hourly rates - point 8 is £7.09, 10 is £7.24, 11 is £7.71.

btw wheresthehamster, you should be getting paid for about 43 weeks, because you should get holiday pay - I think it's actually 43.26 weeks or something weird like that - it's averaged out & I get 1/12 of the yearly amount every month.

AttilaTheMum · 22/06/2007 23:10

'Full time' is generally 37 hours a week,so if you just get paid for term time plus 4 weeks holiday, and you work 20 hours a week you would get 20/37 of 43.26/52 of the annual rate.

Pinkchampagne · 22/06/2007 23:10

I work 20 hours a week & I take home peanuts!

MrsWho · 22/06/2007 23:15

According to the UNion they are trying to harmonise it across the country and they think we will all go up grades but then get paid at somewhere between 42-46 weeks

wheresthehamster · 22/06/2007 23:26

Thanks Attila. I see now why the ads say you get 4 weeks paid holiday. You are basically paid for term time only (39 weeks) but get an extra 4 as holiday pay. The penny drops.

I find it very hard to read my payslip every month!

I gross about £700 a month for 25 hours a week. I am the only unqualified TA in my school. We get more money for having a qualification e.g. NVQ, STA.

Pinkchampagne · 22/06/2007 23:38

I have a qualification & don't get paid any extra for it.

wheresthehamster · 22/06/2007 23:40

Come and work at my school!!

The HT is wonderful and generous too!

Pinkchampagne · 22/06/2007 23:44

Think I will! I certainly seem to be working in the wrong school, by the sounds of things!

CaptainUnderpants · 23/06/2007 10:49

The hourly rates is quite interesting . When I complete my NVQ3 I will be on about £9 per hour at the playgroup I am currently with.

I have had a look at the rates loclally through job adverts and it seems at the moment I am better off fincailly where I am .

I will certainly contact the LEA when the time comes nearer for me to think about a move.

I think if you have NVQs or the HLTA qualification you'd be on a higher scale point than 11.
Actually I've just found the letter where I was put on full time hours & I'm actually on Grade 5, point 25, which is higher than I thought - the hourly rate is £10.49 and I get paid for 44.63 weeks.

CaptainUnderpants · 23/06/2007 11:19

thanks .
