Care Home job - working Christmas to New Year’s Day

Hi all

I’m new to this website and I’ve found a lot of people give excellent advice.

I work in a care home and today I’ve just seen my rota for the Christmas and New Year’s Day rota. Our company policy states that we can either work Christmas Day Boxing Day and Christmas Eve, or New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. To my shock horror looking at my rota, the manager has put down for me to work every single one of these days and no one else has to.

I didn’t get chance to speak to my managers about this as they had left the building by the time I saw the rota. Should I right a letter to say I will not be doing every single one of those hours and threaten to get the union involved or should I wait until I’m back at work next week?

Thanks for all your help and advice xx

If it's anything like the care home I worked in, the manager would have passed the letter around amongst the staff, so they could all tut and roll their eyes at it. Best deal with it in person, if you don't you'll be seen as a soft touch and taken advantage of.

Friends? I don’t have friends Blush I am fair though.

Can you not e-mail ?
As others have said, I wouldn't start with anger.
Start by saying - "I've just looked at the rota and there seems to have been a mistake. The policy is that we either work Christmas or New Year, and that everyone is asked to contribute 22 hours. It would seem that I've mistakenly been put down for both, and, looking at the rota there are some other staff who haven't been put for their full 22 hours. I'd appreciate it if you could let me know the corrected rota as soon as you can. Thanks Rizzl"

Going in 'complaining' just starts you off on a bad foot and makes the manager defensive.

I don’t know the managers email address unfortunately wish I did though

Do you have her mobile number? Or could you ring the home and get the number of on-call?

squirrelnut · 27/11/2018 22:25

Text asking for email address...?

rizzlmynizzle · 27/11/2018 22:29

We’re not allowed to discuss problems over the phone about rotas unfortunately. I’ve decided I’ll probably just go in and discuss the issue

Where I live, care home staff are massively required, huge recruitment campaigns. I don’t think many last that long in the job. I would really like to see good staff rewarded in better conditions and wages.

Providing personal care ...if you’re ever on the receiving end of that you’d want a happy motivated person caring for you.

It never ceases to amaze me that managers in the care home my relative is in, bark orders at the lovely lovely staff.
