Calling all ex lawyers

Not sure this is the right place to post...

I’ve been in private practice for 7 years, I’m bored to death of it. (General corporate work)

What have any of you ex lawyers gone on to do?! Or does everyone just go in house? (No, don’t want to consider partnership)

Any ideas appreciated :)

Well... corporate work is well paid, but mind numbingly dull!

Could you train to specialise in a different area?

Considering leaving myself so I’m curious what other people have done. When I did an online careers test it told me I was well suited to a career in.... law! So I have no idea what else to do.

Working as a PSL is an option - either for a law firm or for PLC or Lexis (if you are not based near London, either of the latter accommodate home working very well).

You could also consider the government legal service - lots of jobs going with Brexit coming. I don't think it matters that you've done corporate, they're more interested in intellect and ability.

Or join a regulatory body.

Have you considered Risk and/or compliance. Not a lawyer (was a PA) but have worked in law for over 20 years. Moved to corporate from Litigation in 2001 and haven't looked back since. Moved in-house 3 years ago and will never do private practice again, the opportunities are amazing. Though the work can be repetitive.

I went inhous to a bank but the more interesting work in doing something like VC/infra funds etc. If you get some experience as an in house transactional counsel somewhere like that then there is the possibility to move to GC/COO type role eventually. I've ex corporate law friends now working as lawyers in Facebook. Google. Spotify. Deliveroo. One was almost offered a job as a lawyer at Man United (she was too senior). Finding a good recruiter is the challenge but I think general corporate is a brilliant background for interesting post PP jobs.

Ok, I'm still a lawyer but I'm planning my exit route. I start part time study next year with the Anglican church with a view to eventual ordination.

I know a number of former lawyers. One works for victim support and another is a restorative justice coordinator.

Why did you become a lawyer in the first place? What was it that drew you to it? Look at what you enjoy about lawyering, your own personal skills and interests and think about where else they could be utilised.
