Child Practicioner, GP Receptionist, Care Assistant

Hi,

Been a SAHM for what feels like forever. Thinking of returning to work and want to choose one of the above but what?
GP Reception I have experience of (can use my admin skills whilst helping people).
Childcare have done voluntary (fits in better with school runs etc).
Care Assistant never done it but have an interest and some personal experience.
Anyone who does any of these jobs can you tell me why I should choose it?

I’d avoid care assistant because of shift work if you have a family. If I were you I’d go for gp receptionist, the nhs has increments so you will be ‘guaranteed’ semi regular pay rises and hopefully decent training?

Not care assistant but a health professional and as a mum would say; I love my job but it is not very family friendly.
I wouldn't do any other type of work but the hours are total family/social killers lots of late/night/weekend and Christmas  working.
My children have known nothing different so expect mum doesn't always make meals or be home before bedtime but can imagine it would be a difficult transition for some kids.

Yes I suppose that's true. I can work part time but I suppose in that industry you always are asked to do overtime?

Even as a part time care assistant you’re still expected to do shift work, nights potentially and bank holidays, Christmas etc. Just not as much as full time staff!

I’ve worked as a GP receptionist and whilst I did love it, you are given a tremendous amount of abuse from the public and in most practices are expected to cover other receptionists sick/holiday leave at quite short notice which can sometimes be early morning/late evening shifts. Have also worked in childcare and to be honest did find that much more of a rewarding job! Good luck with whatever you choose!

Having been in a very similar situation, I'm due to start my new job next week as a GP's receptionist.

I deliberately sought out the job because I wanted something that would use my existing admin skills but wouldn't involve me just sitting at a screen all day not interacting with people.

I know that it will involve dealing with unhappy/difficult people but I really don't mind that (and reckon I can handle it after many years of pub supervisory work) and love talking to people and helping people.

It also fits really well around my DC (25 hours over 3 days) and as mentioned above, I wanted the benefits of an NHS job (holidays, pay rises, training, promotion possibilities etc).

The interview was almost entirely competency based so my advice would be to have as many practical examples to hand as possible of times you did X/Y/Z in accordance with the requirements listed in the job spec/person profile.

Child care is not family friendly really. It's usually 8-6 as you generally look after children so parents work.
I found I had to pay for someone to look after my dc before/after school and during holidays while I looked after someone else's.
