How do you get time off for interviews if you have a full time job?

Just that really.

My employer is strict with annual leave so interested to hear what others do - do you pull a sickie or lie and say you have an appointment? I think that's my own option....

What do you mean "strict with annual leave"?

Prawnsandwhich · 20/11/2018 19:40

In the past I’ve always said I have an appointment I need to attend. Usually giving 2-3 days notice. Never had a problem

If you cant use annual leave I would let the new employer know that you currently work from X until Y and can they accommodate an interview that fits in with thia. This will look far better to a prospective employer than pulling a sickie.

Childcare problem, child is sick

Appointments generally at my last place, but it was fairly easy y because people were in and out the office a lot and there was a LOT of unpaid overtime so you generally just didn't really say anything to anyone, everyone assumed you were somewhere else and then if they asked you said you were at an appointment. Ideally some vague hint at it being mental health related and no one would ever ask you anything about the appointment ever again. We had to ask for leave circa 12 months in advance so useless for interviews.

I had about 5 interviews over a 6 week period .
I arranged for long lunch or leave early saying I had a appointment , a couple of times said it was child care problems ( felt bad about lying but made the time up ) I think I also may have used 1/2 day annual leave once too . You got to do what you got to do if you want to find a new job not sure if they suspected but I got a new job so wasn't too fussed .

Ask to be interviewed before or after work hours or during your lunch break if it's doable. Interviewers know most candidates are trying to be subtle about their job hunt!

It depends on the job you apply for, some might be flexible and interview around you needs, most have set dates/times and changing these are not an option.

No harm asking ( making it clear you totally understand if not possible).

Early morning, lunchtime or evening interview.

Appointments, flu, etc- how much bloody notice do they want for annual leave? Are people not allowed lives where things crop up...can see why you may want to leave
