Is anyone a relationship counselor?

I'm considering re-training in this field but am concerned about job prospects. Has anyone qualified and set up a private practice? Is this a field you'd recommend? I'd be going from a relatively comfortable corporate job - I'm not expecting to make the same salary, but I don't feel like I have a good sense of what's realistic (in terms of earning as well as hours). I'd also be interested to hear what any practitioners think of the work itself - as I'm drawn to it but also slightly apprehensive about that, too!

Hours tends to be evenings with relationship work.

Pay is on average £35 an hour in Private Practice, you need to do at least level 4 and many courses won't let you do level 4 if you haven't done 2 and 3.

It is very much a calling of volunteers, so after qualification, for the BACP you need a further 450 hours to be accredited. Paid jobs are rare, relate has its own counselling training. But there is the expectation of volunteering in order to get accredited.

Look at the counselling directory and see just how many counsellors are within 10 miles of you.

It will cost about £5k for training (Level 2-4) add to that insurance, professional membership, your own personal therapy (amount varied depending on the course), supervision fees. Also consider the time it will take for the training and placement hours to fit everything in.

It is very much a vocation, but you need to be realistic and aware of the realities. I am a counsellor, I specialise in Trauma, At times it is hard and draining as much as rewarding. Counselling training also changes you a lot, you reassess relationships and you see things differently.
